The atrocities that took place there can be heard, seen, and smelled from the other side of the barbed wire fence.
She said something to effect of: this was all happening in our backyards and everyone knew.
As if it was easier to ignore the carnage instead of doing something to stop it.
If you're thinking, "but it doesn't *feel* like fascism, nothing in my life seems amiss," then congratulations, you have discovered what fascism is like.
They're also discovering what side fascism is prepared to assume they're on...until proven otherwise.
Fascism leaves most folks alone as a tactic, saying, "Your life doesn't need to change...unless YOU change it."
Resistance seems masochistic...
You won't notice much, as the people being disappeared and targeted will come largely from vulnerable demographics or those without connections.
And while you may care, it will be easy for your friends and family to avoid the horrible headlines. At dinner, they'll talk about more pleasant topics. They'll pretend it's not happening. They'll even deny knowing about it, like Germans.
