Just finished the utterly absorbing and entertaining Maths of Life and Death by @kityates.bsky.social

Eminently accessible to number geeks and mathphobes alike, it is a very well written investigation into its ubiquity without ever feeling preachy

and in that spirit, two books I've enjoyed recently: the first is a reissue of a 1982 book telling the story of the deaths of three siblings at their farm in Devon in the 70s, Earth to Earth by John Cornwell. It now has a new postscript updating the story, and it's brilliant (gift link to review)

(reposting because I tagged the wrong Tom Whipple) the second is @whippletom.bsky.social Battle of the Beams, which is a fab telling of the development of radar and the huge impact it had on the war. It avoids being too nerdy (there are some diagrams) but is detailed and authoritative. Do read it.

and as a PS, I'm reading @joedunthorne.bsky.social's Children of Radium at the moment, which is a bit different to other books unpicking a Jewish family's experiences of the war as it examines complicity and guilt as much as survival. So well written, too.

oh, I realise that all 3 books I've recommended here are by men, so here are 3 by women to redress the balance. Second, There Is No Ethan, by Anna Akbari, is compelling and chilling - it's the story of a long, detailed catfishing and how Akbari first fell into the trap of being manipulated and then tracked down the manipulator. No spoilers, but bloody hell, the denouement is quite something (gift link)

It's absolutely brilliant. Best book I've read in ages. Set in Sicily after the Peloponnesian War but it's somehow like listening to two blokes chatting shit in a Dublin pub. So readable.
