I was very active WP in the early 2000s. Admin. Climbing the ranks of active users, searching local libraries for information in my field that I could create articles with. Life got in the way, but I still look at WP in awe of how its endured.

I have once tried to contribute, by correcting 2 articles and providing one, and it was a very unpleasant experience. As I got blocked from editing then, it took the article I started around 10 years to become reasonable. I am out.

People used to put material from a project that I worked on into wiki (it's a ranking of companies by toxic pollution and GHG emissions by a university-affiliated think tank) but whoever was doing it stopped and I didn't feel like I could do it because I'd done the primary research. Still true?

it's probably not the best idea — especially if you're new to editing — since it's pretty close to the line of promoting your own work. it's not prohibited, but can be tough to do judiciously.

Is fixing typos, formatting errors, dead links, etc fine without reading any of the policies?

I usually do that casually while reading an article, especially when I'm researching the links in it anyway.

I’ve tried a couple of times to fix clear factual errors in both the Swedish and English version. And with the best available reference sources.
Every time my edits+sources has been removed within 5
minutes and I’ve been contacted by e-mail by someone questioning the sources because printed books.

I’ve given up. I just don’t have time to care. What could be a 5
minute fix, as originally intended, instead turn into a several day negotiation with people who see it as their purpose to prevent others from editing articles they claim ownership to.

This is my experience, as well. It's not that the process is intimidating, it's that the culture is toxic enough that even if I see a factual error in a realm of my expertise, I just don't bother.

Even if someone wasn't actively "guarding" an article I had worked on, contributions I made might still be edited to be wrong, or be rewritten in bad style. Either way, revision/correction was required. And it never ended- like building a sandcastle when the tide is coming in. Eventually I gave up.

This was my experience as a pretty active editor in the mid-2000s. Any difference of opinion took days or weeks to resolve, and moderators were slow and ineffective at best. I gave up and have never gone back.
