i do think the degree to which bluesky is stressing that they do not use blockchains really underscores how toxic even a faint whiff of blockchain has become to any normal platform

i think the gaming sector of the industry is the most hostile to blockchain of any (and its customers quickest to brigade and boycott and run for the hills at the faintest mention). it's less of a holywar in the rest of the industry, for better or worse.
Maybe not any platform, just to any platform with a high number of people who are allergic to crypto, of which there is indeed a high concentration here 🙃
watching this play out with blockchain, NFTs, and then LLMs, one right after the other, with the hype (and investment) bubble getting bigger every time, has been SO weird
Most of it can be reused outside blockchains, but a fair bit is definitely quite tied to it. In particular more flexible and efficient Zero-knowledge proofs has a ton of usecases (RISC zero). Efficient verification of a large volume of signed messages is usable for the bluesky firehose too
Of course these companies are investing more for the profit than the tech itself and I don't generally trust their motives, but at least there's something useful coming out of it. Let's hope it ends up net positive
I feel positive in that they seem to be happy about how bluesky is already operating and the ATProto decentralization. I have a feeling they might be aware enough of the public opinion of crypto and associated tech, and trying to invest in solutions which are akin to but not exactly blockchain.
i mean, my ex and i often shared (true) stories about how "we talked a lot re:using laptops to mine bitcoin thru 2009 but never bothered, surely we'd have solved enough (e.g. even 1 block) to make today-$millions--but it would all be organized crime money sooo." and this is the WHOLESOME variety 1/2
of bitcoin story. this is a story the does not incorporate all the outrageous scandals and attacks and grifts and (etc etc etc) of the real "people who actually got in" stories. like our story is we JUST would have maybe made a ton of blood money because we read hacker news. 2/2
"We do not partake in rolling in pools of excreta ourselves. That is disgusting. We merely associate closely with excrement-appreciators in a way that generates the kind of question to which this is an answer. I hope that clarifies our position."

I'm on board with nuking cryptocurrency, I don't think it's helpful to go after the bsky devs until they actually pull some shit themselves.

* celestia (blockchain network)
* risc zero (blockchain proof verification)
* fabric (chips for the blockchain sector)
???
What atproto features would entice them for blockchain? Identity?
I dunno.
Maybe to Clown Penis dot Fart.
but deflationary currencies aren't cool and we have Paul Krugman here who inoculated me against the idea with this nice parable

God what a fucking tone deaf thing to use as a name too, literally use anything else
I don't understand why they didn't just offer their users the chance to invest, I know I would have
