I don't know why people are so obsessed with top-down conspiracies of control and compliance or deep ideological commitments when it comes to fascism, when the reality is that people will happily sign-up to fascism when it is in their interests to do so.

It just preys on an existing (or engineered) bigotry.
That and fascist movements do contain conspiracies outside of this ideology context (Night of Long Knives, etc)
why would people NOT want to understand history? it all validates dialectics once everything is clear
people should WANT to understand it all in its context

They are susceptible to propaganda, because they are poor and lack education, and this comes from the top down.
But shopkeepers didn't just support pogroms because they hated Jews - but also because it put their Jewish competitors out of business.
I find people like that are the most prone to fascism ironically, or at least to be complicit to it
Most regular folk won’t *be* better off, though some may *feel* better by being placed above those who are deemed lower in the pecking order.
Reactionary people really don't see long term systemic effects.
