I tried (briefly and on a very quiet road!) wearing my polarizing sunglasses. They were much better with the headlights but as expected, too dark otherwise!
Bright LED lights on lifted trucks and cars should be heavily regulated. Blinding someone driving should be a crime. Same way people can’t shine lasers at planes.
That's very true and you get used to it.
I got hard contact lenses in the 1970s (cost me £40), and found what the sky really looked like when corrected.
Had to give them up as they were so painful and now have a phobia of anything or anybody touching my eyes!
& the police lights are the worst at night. Just the most eye-poking blue that blinds me. if I ever get pulled over they're going to think I'm high or something because I'll be squinting so hard 😵
Night driving is so dangerous now with such bright LED lights..factor in 4x4s and vans and lorry’s who are higher up, all the better to shine right in your eyes!
Then you have mindless people who park on the wrong side of the road, headlights full on straight at you!
I have anti glare glasses 1/2
2/2..which do help a bit, but I can’t understand why the UK government don’t do something. They introduced the 20 miles and hour rule on roads, lots don’t need it and it’s stupid, only a few do.
But then It makes them money.. ruling for
less bright lights don’t..
Rant over 😂
When I used some very strong LED lights (necessary for rural roads in complete darkness otherwise), I fitted strong diffusers over them, to stop the light going in just one direction - otherwise it's more like a weapon than lighting up the road, which helps no-one.
I used to see that, but after cataract surgery it stopped. I still have astigmatism. That December I decided to go on a tour of Christmas lights, because I thought I would never see them that way again, and I was right.
I live out I the wilds of Norfolk, no lights, just dark narrow country lanes. LED lights are a real menace under those conditions - even worse in the rain. I no longer risk night driving.
If you see lights branching out like that, you have astigmatism. I have it and have a hard time believing other people see lights as just the shape that the light source is
I remember leaving the opticians office with my first pair of glasses. I couldn't believe what proper vision could distinguish. And I also have astigmatism so I get a special coating to lessen the effect of lights at night.
I had surgery for macular pucker, which is part of why I see the moon sort of like that. I won't do the other eye as it's not as bad. It upsets me tho to not see the moon right. I love moonlit nights.
I had my astigmatism corrected when I got corneal implants. My now-normal vision just sees a round light, or a point of light. It would be pleasant but headlights and street lights are poorly aimed and have way to much luminosity now.
Wow. I have a high astigmatism in my right eye (less in the left) so I can’t wear contacts anymore but I didn’t realize it effects the vision like that.
I LOATHE those LED lights. Most of the new pick-up trucks around here have them. The trucks sit far higher off the ground than my tiny subcompact so those lights hit right at eye level. 😖
I have flashes occasionally in my left eye which has floaters but I rarely get them at night. Also I’ve been able to control it somewhat and prevent it from happening.
I think the OP may well have had astigmatism, but also whatever caused the streaking effect as well, so they associated it purely with what they had been diagnosed with. Astigmatism is usually just a minor focusing glitch. This streaking effect resembles a camera trick.
... Camera trick involves smearing a tiny amount of vaseline over the lense, or using an optical filter with lines scored into it. Which suggests it's something to do with the surface of the eye, eg excess tears.
I developed this about 5 years ago. I live in a rural area, curvy roads and lots of trucks with retina scanners for lights. 💥💥
Sometimes it's a miracle I don't run off the road 😱
I have extreme astigmatism. When driving at night I look down & to the right and follow the line on the right side of me on the road. You can still see with your peripheral vision but you don’t have to squint or block the light with your hand. Been doing that for 50 years with no problems.
I don't have this condition, but I simply cannot night drive anymore because of those god awful LED headlights on cars now. That, coupled with the fact that half the cars on the road are 4x4s so regardless of whether the vehicle is coming towards you or behind you, you're gonna be blinded 💯
Yeah, it definitely depends on the severity of lens distortion. If I don't keep my windshield spotless and wear polarized lenses, this is basically what I see.
Looks like I'm gonna eventually have to start driving the way my grandma did before she gave up her license when she was 95- by memory. No lies, that's what she told me she did.
Amplify it a touch for those of us with that and had Lasik… 🫠🫠 driving at night is a chore now. I wear blue blocker lenses for all those blue headlights though. Helps a bit I feel. But they still twinkle. 🥴
I get bad stigmata when cycling in the winter some years. A medical contact says he can't treat a mythological condition. It was really bad in 2019, when I was commuting to food production involving alcohol handwash.
small underrated fun fact that people dont talk abt enough, you can tell what telescope era this is from! telescopes from the Hubble telescope has the stereotypical 4 pointed star because of its mirrors, but you can tell this one was pictured by a james webb telescope bc of the 8 points.
I swear I doublechecked the number of points I was counting twice before asking. It was late and I just couldn’t see the horizontal points. My eyes are old and it was late. 🤓

I DON’T CARE. IT’S TRUE.

They work on Televue eyepieces like the Delite and the Delos.
It's a bit pricey, but the benefit is you can keep using the eyepieces as you migrate to larger SCTs. If the Rx changes, just get a new adapter.

Although I've also noticed people putting on their full beams too which is an issue.
Needless to say, I don't go far from home.
But, there's a party on our back porch every night because of it 🤣😂😅🤭
I have to drive with my side windows open when it's rainy. The refraction is overwhelming. I thought I was just me!
Well, not really, because I know if I was in the middle of all that you'd run me the fuck over, but still
When I first visited the eye doc for a floater, the first question they asked me is if I get flashed at night.
Sometimes it's a miracle I don't run off the road 😱
