Always love the "license cyclists" angle. Even if there was an issue (there isn't) with "reckless" cyclists, we've been licensing drivers for a century and we still can't get them to make a complete stop at a stop sign.

Bicyclists and pedestrians pay their share of taxes for the upkeep of roads as drivers do
Driver license fees pay down the additional cost to taxpayers for ROAD MAINTENANCE which, considering the amount they use, automobiles are mostly responsible for
Drivers say that because they know they will be found at fault if they hit a bicyclist.
They're resentful that they must carry traceable identification and face consequences if they do.
They reason that licensing the bicyclist will shift accountability off their shoulders
It's a complex assumption
As someone that drives/ bikes, I want more ppl commuting by bike, bus, scooter; selfishly, because it means less cars on the road making my commute faster in my car.. if 20,000 ppl commute this way in a city, that's 20,000 less cars to fight with. need to encourage motorcycles too, similar effect
What’s crazy is the underlying sentiment really isn’t “make cyclists pay their fair share, since licenses would be inexpensive”
But rather “ this way, when I’m in a fit of road rage, I can go off on someone who is more vulnerable on the roads than me, take down their plate and report them “
Driver not stopping at a stop sign is exactly how my 2.5 year old daughter in a bicycle trailer ended up with a skull fracture. I can’t describe the rage I feel at these people!
The bureaucratic overhead would outstrip revenues unless the license was too expensive for most people to afford, especially low income folks. And what about multiple bikes? I have 6! Would I need a license for each? The real motivation is a big "fuck you, cyclists", full stop.
Cyclists do pay their fair share. Many also have cars and in many areas, taxes for roads are collected & distributed from a variety of sources.
That argument is moot. Do you go to public school or have kids attending? No? You’re still paying for it.
