Getting texted about school cancelations 24 hours in advance is better than sitting in front of the TV two minutes before the bus might arrive, while hoping to see your county’s name appear in the slow-ass crawl on the news. But where’s the drama

For me it showed up when the power went off right as I was meant to be getting dinner on the stove. All dark all cold all drama with a 3 and a 5 year old crying in the dark and having to convince my spouse that resting a candle on the carbon monoxide alarm to use as a hallway light was a bad idea 🥹
As someone who went to Northwest High School in Cincinnati it was crushing when they went from North College Hill to Norwood when reading the closings on Q102
It was the worst when you'd turn on the tv and see the crawl was just after where your school would be, so you'd have to sit and wait for it to circle back around
There was nothing more thrilling as a child than listening to local radio and hearing “we have some updates to our school closings,” hoping yours was one of them
Have for my kid. He gets asynchronistic learning days. They get lessons uploaded by 10 AM from all the teachers that they have to complete. At least it counts as a day of school so the year isn't extended.
Yeah...my kids have Non Traditional Instruction (NTI) Days. So they get sent home with Chromebooks when the weather looks crappy. I've had them home for a week and I'm the Teacher's Assistant for two elementary classes. I'm going insane.
My school would change its voice mail box greeting to say whether or not there was school that day.
My province also had a Twitter account (pre 2015) where they'd post district closures.
Kids these days will never know the wonderful feeling of being ready for school and getting to go back to bed.
Or listening to the radio waiting for your school's name to be called. In my day, we walked a mile to the bcanceled. Skirts or dresses only to stand there forever, only to realize the bus wasn't going to come because school was canceled.
I've lamented that my kids will never know the agony of waiting for the local radio station to go through every town. Mine was second to last alphabetically in the area. I'd hear a dozen schools announced before mine was skipped over.
Growing up in Boston in the 80s I used to listen to the radio for the school snow cancellations. Alphabetical order. My school started with W. That was some war of the worlds level radio drama every time
Grew up in Ohio and each county had tons of separate school districts and private schools. My school district started with a V, so if bar was at the beginning of the alphabet then it would take awhile.
1/3 of the time my mom would make me walk to the bus stop and wait "just in case". Vividly remember wading through a blizzard, only for the bus to never come. And then getting yelled at for coming home.
When I was in HS, we had a "it is too cold" day on the last day of exams before Christmas. Our principal at the time had said "if an exam day is cancelled, it means I'm dead."
The radio DJ ran through all the cancellations, including the diocese. (1/2)

In those days, they didn't even go alphabetically, they went FIFO

We were the only school in Franklin County in session that day. (2/2)
