It’s a sad state of affairs when asking people to simply be considerate of others is a bridge too far. I used the R-word all the time when I was younger. I learned that it was hurtful to say it so, I stopped. My life isn’t lesser because I quit using a word.

As a high school teacher, there was a glorious 10-15 year period where NO ONE used the “r” word, but I regret to inform you it’s back in a big way- despite my best efforts, kids are using it all the time again.
