Yeah, it had a little bit of everything. Evangelical BYU (Oral Roberts University), mega churches, the home town of the KKK grand wizard, the town the mtn meadow massacre folks were from, Branson Missouri (Vegas of the Midwest w/lots of Mormon family variety shows at the Casinos). No dull moments

I had seriously considered a mission at one point and I always wanted to do Germany. Ironically my dad wanted to serve in Germany but went to Cali instead.
He wasn't allowed out of the country because of my grandpa's job as an FBI agent during the Cold War. They had legit fears he'd be targeted

Switzerland - Geneva, spent most of my time in France. Then nominally transferred to the Johannesburg, South Africa mission but went to Reunion Island and Mauritius for the last six months.

Prior to the formation of the Madagascar mission, they would send experienced French-speaking missionaries to the Islands. There were six of us on one island, and four on the other. One pair for each small branch.

My transfer to Reunion Island involved a 10 hour train ride from Marseille to Geneva, a drive to the consulate to pick up my visa, then a 1 hour flight to Paris, followed by a 16 hour flight to St Denis, Reunion with stops in Djibouti and the Seychelles. Then 1.5 hour drive to St Pierre. 😅

Practically everywhere I served, our "area" was vast. Transfers involved hours on the train. Marseille had a million people at the time and there were 8 of us. Most cities would only have four missionaries.

My father-in-law grew up, as a non-Mormon, in Baton Rouge (as did his family going back generations to when Spain ruled.) While attending a family reunion there I baptized one of my sons in the BR stake center. The temple was under early stages of construction then.
