it is kinda sad because alot of art groups (particularly fb) are obviously full of AI art and people are too naive to know otherwise, you kind of have to PROVE via video that you are drawing and even then people are getting sneaky. Didn't think Id ever need those public speaking classes

Ugh I’m so sorry people have been mean. I don’t know why anyone thinks commenting on someone’s appearance on videos about something unrelated is ok. And yeah it really sucks how we have to “prove” ourselves now as real artists because of AI and other scammers.

Hard agree! Besides not wanting to be on camera, making video content adds a LOT more work to a job that's already hard to sustain. I also find even if I don't personally appear in the video, just the effort to set up and film alone breaks my painting immersion + worsens my executive dysfunction

Yes this is the one thing that saddens me. I enjoy listening to music or an audiobook while drawing and it helps me get into the zone. Instead I have to break that immersion to film.

So true, it’s so much extra work and it’s also a much different kind of skillset. Some artists really enjoy it and that’s great, but I just don’t! If I wanted to go into video editing etc I had that opportunity in art school, I chose illustration for a reason.

For sure! I'm personally in the situation that I'm sure I would enjoy it... If I had more time. But as it is I'm already burning the candle at both ends with my business and struggling to find time+energy for art. I can't afford this extra work, and I hate that it's almost mandatory online now

I have mixed feelings about this. Whether we like it or not selling/marketing our stuff often means putting ourselves out there at cons, fairs and the like. And that also shouldn't necessarily mean putting on a carnival barker show online to please algorithms if we don't feel like it.

IG is worst as far as forcing video content. I miss when just sharing images and photos was enough!! I sometimes do time-lapses of art on tiktok (with just music, never talking) or nature and that’s it. Video content is just not for me and it sucks to be punished by algorithms for not doing more.

It’s so frustrating. I miss browsing all the wonderful art on there but it’s impossible now. I have turned off suggested content on there which has helped with all the stuff I don’t want to see but it’s still mostly video :(

I feel the same way. Even something like a speedpaint video takes quite a lot of work, such as setting up the screen recording app before you draw, making sure it recorded properly, and editing it down for posting online. That just wastes a lot of time I could have been drawing more stuff.

I’m not against finding a “brand” (whatever that means for you) for your own art or yourself by the way, but it should be a CHOICE and we should be allowed to have boundaries without it negatively affecting creative careers.

A couple years ago, I realized just how much I hated having my face on the internet, and did a sort of deep clean of removing any pics- The idea of being expected to sell myself as part of my artistic brand is such a nightmare 😱 So I have to strongly agree/empathize here

Ceramics really lends itself to video, and I kind of love making them but I don’t want to be in them. At all. I draw the line at my hands and sometimes my voice. If I could be a disembodied voice in real life I would love that too.

this tbh. I used to want to do videos as a main thing as a teen but now the expectations for producing them have gotten so high. Editing short videos can take a lot out of me, never-mind committing to quick vids I'd feel nothing about years later. That energy's better put towards my main practice.

video is also so tedious to edit and the software situation is just so annoying, god forbid you still be primarily a desktop user and want to do *anything*. i do some video content, i stream a little, i record timelapses of some of my art with CSP, but it's too much to do all the time

All of this, while I feel I've made big progress on learning the ways of video, edit and assemble one the way I consider it publishable still takes me like ten thousand years. No way I could keep a decent schedule like that, ever.

One of my side hobbies is converting all my old VHS tapes to digital files, and I use Final Cut Pro. Outside of the raw transfers, it takes a long time to edit them down, color correct, fix sound, etc, and even longer to render on my low-end iMac. Video editing is time consuming even for old VHS.

I can draw with my Wacom tablet and art app while the video renders, but performance does tend to dip a bit as all of the Mac resources are going toward the video rendering. I guess a memory upgrade may alleviate that, but it's one way I try to multitask.

i'm still over here using an ancient version of Windows Movie Maker because i just haven't had the time or money for any of the nice desktop software, lmao. if it was good enough for my high school video project in 2005 it's good enough NOW! D:< (i use YouCut on mobile though)

Ahh, Windows Movie Maker. I remember using that back in my college days making pointless video mashups for YouTube. I really liked the version that was bundled with Windows Vista since it had far better effects and was a bit more stable.
