I was an ELO fan first, FLCL second because I found this AMV, and from the comments realized it this was just a reference to the DAICON opening!! Lives rent free in my brain to this day
But Japanese copyright law is 1N times stricter than American. No review exception, no parody exception - a fan drawing a picture of their favourite anime character is technically breaking the law there. Its just wild to me :p
Maybe this is a modern take on copyright there, unsure when it started.
I think they just dgaf and it was really never meant to be anything more than the opening of the con. They didn't even clear the ELO song. Pure dedication and love of the game
I mean, no. It’s literally meant as the opening for an anime con. It wasn’t meant to be made commercially available originally, which is always why recordings of it were rare back then. It’s not meant to “be spiteful of the USA” these are just popular culture things and this is a doujin animation
This changed me the first time I saw it. I was never the same again. An absolute master work of animation and a joy to watch every time I see it. Distilled happiness.
Oh, that was awesome! Took my kids to a local anime con. They had a panel on anime history and no one in the audience even knew what that was. My friend has that on an 8" LD!
She's had it for years. But she's the only person I knew in our entire group who had that. Hell, even those 8" LDs I only saw in person two or three times.
I'm back up to one. A few months ago I got my old Maison Ikkoku LD set back from a friend of mine. Definitely the most expensive anime thing I ever bought (originally). But it's great to have it home.
If you're interested in the story, there's a dorama based on a dorama called Aoi Honoo which ALSO covers the arc where Hideaki Anno & co. create Daicon IV video while the protagonist is experiencing an existencial crisis.
I came here to make a sarcastic comment about how this totally just changed my life, and as I thought the comment, a bunny lady fought Gundams, making the comment very unsarcastic.
There are still 2 minutes to go in this video once I finish this #skydrop
One of my favorite animations of all time, I only wish I could have been in attendance when it was shown live the first time, I just know that crowd must have been GOING CRAZY
My favorite part about this audience reaction video is that the Daicon Animation is clearly *not 100% finished*. There are some placeholder sequences! Classic Gainax, over budget and over deadline. XD
This made me think of the Anime Expo where the first Rebuild of Eva was showed off and the panel after, one of the production staff commented on how rare it is to get a live reaction from Japanese audiences, or at least modern ones. Damn, it just drives home how hard this slapped live.
I uploaded this 14 years ago because I used it in a panel about the anime industry referencing itself. Glad it’s still educating all these years later.
Man it's fucking weird hearing this in Japanese. Like usually the direction is very different between japan and usa dubs but this is like... aunno you coulda told me the VAs were bilingual and I'd believe it.
Kinda wanna watch in Japanese dub now... which is kinda weird I haven't yet.
High-school me had no idea what was going on in that scene, but then I had no idea what was going on in the rest of the show either, so I just assumed it was more of the same 😂 I didn't realize it was a reference until just now
This chef-d'œuvre will never get old, still amazed like at first view. Is there some footage of the crowd of the Daicon, when it aired for the 1st time ?
I recommend everyone looking to learn more about this animation and the early days of Gainax check out this zine I picked up that goes through an oral history of the topic!
I'm a little disappointed that this version leaves off the opening, which summarizes the Daicon III video and then has the girl from that video grow up to become the apocalypse bunnygirl. This copy starts in mid-glow-up.
My favourite track from this session didn't even make it on the album, but only as a B-side to the "Twilight" single: "Julie Don't Live Here". What a song!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP1rMsI0Pl4
The Way Life's Meant to Be is probably my favorite song of theirs by a country mile, and Your Truly, 2095 is a bop
(Is it still cool to say "bop" in 2025???)
Indeed. A true product of love for animation… and the animators including Hideaki Anno went on to start Gainax studio (Nadia, Wings of Honneamise, Neon Genesis Evangelion)
I saw this 25 years ago and it still is amazing today.
And it was animated for a convention! That's why it's called Daicon! It was the work of like a dozen passionate nerds who worked in a sweatbox for a couple weeks. To this day, it's still considered one of the biggest start points for otaku as a culture.
I have never seen this before but this is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, something made from pure passion and dedication. Made by people who created some of the best animation known to man. God, I’m speechless. How have I never seen this until now. Also using ELO is PERFECTION!
No no, lol. Not that talented. @kingterrae.bsky.social made this for me as a commission. Great artist/animator. They nailed what I was looking for. Love Gainax/Trigger - FLCL was my awakening and I discovered the reference to this Daicon animation so many years later.
Giant Xenomorph with mechanical legs (reference to one of the Super Sentai series) attacking with the Discovery (from 2001: A Space Odyssey) I believe.

Suffice to say, it was probably the best audition in the history of animation and the start of Studio Gainax, of Nadia & Evangelion fame. ^_^
The show is pretty fun.
But yes, she was fighting Darth Vader.
Even moreso after looking up the history

Also the entirety of Out of the Blue.
ELO is my all time favorite band, so the Daicon IV intro is, naturally, one of my favorite things in existence.
Better version with the intro, it sounds weird without it.
Vader fight to Gavan kata always has me.

Also I forgot how long that intro was! Lol

What a time to be alive.
Kinda wanna watch in Japanese dub now... which is kinda weird I haven't yet.
But damn its good shit, and you can still enjoy it without getting all that. True art.
I love ELO's sense of whimsy and sarcasm mixed in with dead seriousness. It's such a wave of good vibes
(Is it still cool to say "bop" in 2025???)
This is the greatest piece of animation I have ever seen
It's honestly insanely well animated and you can see how much love they have for the IPs being referenced
The amount of effort it must have taken to animate this is blowing me away!

This is the kind of passion for the craft machines can't replicate 💖
Did I just see a xenomorph in jeans
