I learned this when a wise person pointed out to me that the actual ‘oh shit’ moment in Romeo and Juliet is Act 3 (Romeo stabs Tybalt) and not Act 5 (everyone dies.) Act 3 is the irrevocable change. Act 5 is the inevitable consequences playing out.

I find the language of ‘twist’ and ‘climax’ unhelpful because it suggests that the climax is the goal of the book and the twist is a gimmick. To me, the central change is always the point. The climax is just what you get when you take that change seriously.

I’d always taken it as T killing Mercutio (the Luhrman film makes a huge deal of this) - before which it’s a light romcom, after which it’s a revenge tragedy.

Yeah I agree - it’s the whole series of duels in Act 3 scene 1 and that shocking-but-inevitable genre swerve. It’s so good. Up until Romeo kills his new wife’s cousin, though, there’s still the ghost of a chance that someone might get out alive. Afterwards - nope, they’re all doomed.
