Houthaven is not car free.

Built with parking requirements like everywhere else in this country.

We just spend insane amounts of money to bury cars. Amsterdam is not Manhattan lol.

I've seen people post stuff like this before, about how backwards the US is because we don't seem to allow playgrounds next to bars. But....we do....here in Austin for example we have those all over the place. There's a ton of breweries and other venues with built-in playgrounds. And it's awesome.

in the UK too - people go to pubs with their whole families sometimes. Not every pub is there just to get drunk.
The pubs ask them to leave after a certain time

and at pubs, just like restaurants, there's often a family section with a playground.

(the example I have in mind is actually a carvery)

You see this in parts of the US too - I've been to a couple lovely breweries where there are activities for kids explicitly built in.

You also see the polar opposite - Utah prohibits this *by law* - places that serve beer without food are "bars" and no one under the age of 21 is allowed in a "bar."

Austin (and presumably Texas as a whole) is bizarre because it appears to be up to the owner. Some bars that are basically glorified restaurants (Revelry) insist on 21+ at all times (even during the day). Some complete dive bars with no food options (Yellow Jacket) will let kids in all the time.

But breweries are great because they are generally universally "kid friendly". Tons of the ones in Austin have playgrounds or other activities and generally fill that "casual hangout spot" niche

This isn’t a bar with a playground, it’s a school and a bar next door to each other in the same building. The point is that US zoning restrictions often prevent these kinds of arrangements.

And if you don’t think the US is backwards on this stuff, look up Texas blue laws and the all hoops breweries had to jump through to even be able to sell beer on-premises. (Still can’t sell for consumption off-premises either.)

Allowing owners to choose the vibe their place has is best imho. Arizona does a good job splitting the difference; it still makes a distinction between places that primarily serve alcohol and primarily serve food, but kids are allowed in both as long as they're accompanied by their parents.

"If the parents and the people running the place - who presumably are either *not* sociopaths or are and want to preserve their license and know that it'd be at risk if a kid got hurt - think it's ok, then it's probably ok" is a pretty solid rubric.

Found this out the hard way because my spouse and I tried going out with friends to a nice biergarten-style brewery in Salt Lake for our anniversary two months after our kid was born.

Kid was still nursing, so they had to come with.

Rejected at the door because the two-month-old was under 21.
