I love this. It makes me think fondly of something. When I’m working at science museum events, people often ask me if I believe in aliens. My answer is always the same: I think intelligent life likely exists somewhere in the universe, but that doesn’t mean every strange light in the sky is proof.

I believe people when they say they saw something unusual, but without solid evidence, it remains unidentified—not proof of extraterrestrial life. And all of that is ok. Its part of learning and exploring and wanting to understand.

From there, I like to shift the conversation to the big picture. I talk about the sheer scale of the universe, the billions of stars in our galaxy, and how we’ve only been searching for a tiny fraction of time. We don’t even fully know what to look for yet.

Then, I ask them to consider something fun: If intelligent life had a million-year head start, how far could they have expanded? 500 light-years? 100? 40? Could they already know we exist from a distance?

I also bring it back to Earth. Industrial civilization has only been around a short time, but as we advance, our impact on the planet becomes more visible from farther away. The longer we survive, the further our presence might be detectable.

So, could we find them? Maybe. Could they find us? Also maybe. But as of now, we don’t know. What matters is keeping an open mind while staying grounded in evidence—because one day, someone searching just might uncover something incredible.
