Ok, Xmas has never been much of my life, so I need to brush up on a few details. First of all, how do know the three men were wise? Is it because they had the sense not to enquire about Jesus's paternity?

They're from 'the East', that is India, Iran, Babylon, which is enough to make them better educated than people in the Levant. Like being from, say, Oxford, today.
IDK tbh the propagandists of the early Church inventing a bogus census to create the story of Christ being born in King David's city was pretty good spinning.
Once upon a time there were 3 men who met Socrates, who explained to them how they knew nothing, and so should stop giving answers + start asking questions. They went around for centuries asking 'why?' and became known as the 3 whys men. Eventually they met a woman who had learnt when not to ask why
Pedantically, in Matthew they seem to be priests, diviners, specialists in sussing out supernatural doings -- their role in the plot. So more or less philosophers!
They gifted the baby that would later go on to become one of the most ardent anti-wealth and materialism figures in history luxury items whose only qualities are being expensive and useless (until much later when they would discover both conductivity and stink, respectively). How wise could they be?
