Occasionally I need to completely clean up my desktop, so I dump everything into a file named 'desktop'. Then my screen gradually fills up and I do the same. Laptop now resembles a fractal, a bottomless descent down folders marked 'desktop'.

Yep, I have several deep of these too. The Documents folder also has a few layers of Documents folders, ending in an old My Documents folder at the bottom
I backup to an external hard drive, with dates attached which sound organised...maybe should delete some of the older iterations though, things more than a decade old, that are probably copies of things I still have, not that useful
Every now and again, I "discover" a file or project on my desktop I completely forgot I started working on years ago (often on an impulse), but completely forgot where I was headed with it.
I used to do this until I just hid all of my desktop icons and stopped using the desktop completely. Now I just have a bunch of generic folders (finances, images, projects) that I constantly lose things in.
Going through this process now with some old external drives.
backups of backups of backups.
The time has come for consolidation. The memories of memories all stacked over each other is too tall to bear.
I've had desktop icons turned off for years and have no inclination to go back! honestly, I hardly ever see my desktop anyway other than when booting up... I don't get the point...
I do the same thing using a desktop folder. I’ve had it since 2017. I dropped a file in there the other day and I swear I heard it say, “My god, it’s full of stars!”
On Windows you can turn off the desktop icons, and then just use the desktop folder like any other folder on your PC. I preferred that over trying to organize my desktop xD
We are the same. I actually found another folder named Old Desktop on the external drive where I created a new folder called OLD DESKTOP to move the Old Desktop folder into from my current desktop.
That's something Onedrive does by itself at work. Users come to me and complain that all desktop files disappeared and I find that in Documents\ there's Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\Desktop\
You gotta switch to the "Street Fighter" version control system

I avoid this problem by never putting ANYTHING on my desktop. Not even links to start apps. Good luck finding anything you’re looking for. I’m the only one who knows where any of it is kept…
is this still a thing? I know it is from years ago, but nowadays? I'm sure there is a "slow down", but I imagine it is measured in the less time than it takes to blink :-)
I once discovered about 50 different desktop ‘sessions’ (not sure that’s the correct term?) all running simultaneously on my Mac. Wondered why it was running slow. The it guy who took a look at it was creasing. There must have been a similar PS shortcut that created them or something
I create a new folder on my desktop with the date on it, then copy my current desktop including the previous desktop date folder into it. It’s like a bad version of Time Machine but it works for me.
I do something similar, but arguably worse. I have ‘from old laptop’ (the entire contents) files inside ‘old laptop’ files inside ‘old laptop’ files. Who knows how far back it goes…
That's why I've disabled Desktop icons. If I don't know where to save something, it goes to Downloads. And if it is in Downloads, it means I can delete it.
Are we related? That is what I have done for years. However, now I move things into a file entitled “carpet” so that I can proverbially sweep everything under it.
Mine to and I JUST downloaded an app that is supposed to help organize it. I haven’t hit go yet because I’m nervous…of what I don’t know. That I’ll actually be able to use my 15,973 screenshots? That my tax return won’t be in a folder with some random GIFs? Anyway I’ll let you know how it goes.
It’s called Sparkle from Every. Love their work and ethos; interesting watching them grow. I’ll prob play around with it soon. Not sure it’ll be any better than my “Desktop Oct 2024” folder system. 🤣. I actually have a great system from my agency days, if I used it. https://every.to/p/introducing-sparkle
Ditto. Until I created a ‘temp’ folder in which I saved things rather than on the desktop…and yep, it’s now a huge folder with many subfolders, but the desktop is pristine!
I wait for the day, when you can have automatic data warehousing and search engine stuff running locally. Then it won't matter, that my drives are a mess, anymore🤩

been there, done that...
D:/4TB/2TB/OldDrive/OldDrive/40GB/
It probably goes deeper but I worry about awakening something.
It's like some fucked up form of archaeology.
🤦🏻♂️😂

I’m on 12TB at the moment and god knows how I will actually find anything.
with files randomly thrown in every desktop
Or still not realised your ADHD?
So at least they are categorized, then :D

But it is not Temp;
It is Permanent.

Not because it’ll help much, I just like fractals.
