I do find it interesting when 'evidence informed' meets evidence that doesn't fit with the narrative. There's loads of evidence that movement supports learning. Just because that doesn't match how some people think education should look doesn't make it untrue. 🤷‍♀️ - ThreadSky

I've shifted entirely on this myself after becoming an outdoor Environmental Educator. I don't think it goes away with adults either. Did a week away CPD with the Forest Service and we thrived outdoors and up and about in our learning environment.

Similarly there's plenty of evidence that being overly controlling has negative impacts on the development of self-regulation. If you want to argue for a more controlling approach to education you can't also claim to prioritise the development of self-regulation. 🤷‍♀️

The most obvious example of this is the use of extrinsic motivators. We know that they can have negative impacts on intrinsic motivation and we can't just wish that fact away because we find behaviourism useful. 🤷‍♀️

The upshot is that 'evidence informed' needs to start from a discussion about *values*, not from a position that things are 'right' or 'wrong'. Personally I would prioritise joy, movement, self-regulation and intrinsic motivation because I think those are healthy priorities to have! 😊

I do think there needs to be a true middle ground. There are times when movement works best and others when controlled silence - for example - fits best. Evidence means very little without one using their professional expertise.

This is what is meant by evidence informed really. Groups like the EEF keen to highlight the intersection. Equally if research can't be applied to classrooms it becomes pointless. But even practice that is working well can be enhanced by engaging with research. That doesn't mean making a change

Indeed, except perhaps in early years. And yet we worry about childhood obesity. We just have to be honest with ourselves about what is lost when we make certain choices.
