My response below to Qs for this article on “Private Schools Group Apologizes After Claims of Antisemitism at Event” in which my talk was one that made four Jewish students feel threatened bc I used the word genocide. Let’s unpack since they gave ADL the last word. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/15/nyregion/antisemitism-conference-private-schools.html

Thank you for your words.
The ADL and other pro-Israel American Jews are stretching the definition of antisemitism into meaninglessness.
This is infuriating for about a million reasons and I’m mortified that my community’s nominal defenders spend their capital defending naked genocide.
I don’t want people thinking that it’s wrong to criticize Israel. Using the same word for both things attempts to bind American Jews to Israel, which deserves universal condemnation
I also wonder if they actively want to make American Jews feel less safe here, in order to promote the idea to us Israel needs to be defended as a potential refugee if things get worse.
One of the most illuminating (depressing) parts of Israel’s behavior is discovering there’s no consensus for the meaning of “Never Again”.
I was taught it meant “There should never be another genocide like the Holocaust”.
But many interpreted it as “Jews won’t be victims again”.
The gulf between American and Israeli Jews has never been greater.
