Nonlinearity and regionallity matter a lot for aerosols (not for greenhouse gas emissions).

'passing China' is an odd way to phrase it. While India's output is climbing, from the graph China's reduction in SO2 emissions is much more significant. China drops below would be more descriptive of the situation.

I wonder whether the mandating of low-sulphur fuels for the sake of the Mediterranean (only) could have led to those fuels being used for voyages in all other waters—ships unable to risk any contamination of tanks with any trace of sulphurated fuels?

2 things happened at once: sulfur for all areas was cut from 3,5 to 0,5% and for certain areas like the med it was cut from 0,5 to 0,1
%. Sorry for the confusion.

So the ships usually have different fuel tanks for different part of the voyage. And contaminantion at that level isn’t too much of a problem, you usually just pump it in the other tank.

Think of SO2 emissions as temporarily delaying or deferring the arrival/delivery of a portion of expected CO2-driven warming. As SO2 emissions dwindle, that deferred warming resumes.

SO2 kills plants. So Europe and lately also China put filters in cars and coal power plants. India doesn't.
When plants recover from the acid rain, they also create cooling clouds by releasing pheromone-like "VOC". So over land, SO2 reduction is not such a clear-cut heating source as over oceans.
