I also got real help on statistics and RStudio on Mastodon. It also feels much more decentralized than BSky, gives me freedom to migrate servers. Feels marginally faster too.
It makes sense. I’ve always viewed Mastodon as a kind of boutique, networked Discord server. It’s good for smaller communities, but not for the always on conference feel and potential virality that twitter has. Which is a big buy in for many.
At the end of the day there is a large segment of scientists who use social media almost exclusively as a means to get their work out, and the possibility for viral posts (which Masto is designed to prevent) is a big draw. There’s pros and cons to both.
(also, I need to check mastodon to keep track of @psyarxivbot.bsky.social - I still haven't had the time to figure out how to make it work here, and there are no other bots doing a similar service I can steal from).
