Bridie, have you pointed this out to Choice? Anyone who knows the smallest amount about ICE vs electric couldn't possibly suggest burning petrol is a reasonable alternative.

I did the calcs recently and a Camry would have generated less CO2 than a Model 3 based on 2024 emissions intensity in Victoria.

Camry

920 kg CO2

Model 3

1400kWh @ 685g CO2 / kWh
959 kg CO2

Calcs ignore battery emissions or upstream petrol emissions..

But that Choice article is way old, they talk about the Honda Insight, non-hybrid Camrys, petrol at $1.50 a litre, and the discontinued Prius!

@ketanjoshi.co crunched some numbers back in the day. Even at that time if you bought a Tesla Roadster as a daily driver and charged exclusively by plugging directly into Hazelwood (the then dirtiest brown coal on the NEM), your EV was a cleaner choice.

The grid is cleaner now and in the future.

Yep, and there’s a chart in the @mynrma.bsky.social piece I linked that compares data crunched by the EVC that shows similar

EVs use energy more efficiently (granted this depends on the model - some carmakers make horrendously inefficient EVs)
