I, a medium size person who appears to be a woman used to regularly ride the NYC subway at 3 or 4 in the morning in the 80s, a much more violent time. (I worked early night shift.) Never an incident except once we got stuck in a tunnel for hours.

Started riding the subway daily when I was 14, barely over 5 foot, 100 lb soaking wet. Never felt threatened or particularly brave for doing so. It was just a way to get around. Tough talking’ conservative guys have to be the biggest pussies who’ve ever roamed the earth. The bravado is all an act.
