I think this is a big part of it, for sure. People will see something being marketed to younger audiences and throw a fit. Perfect example was the recent right-wing freak out over a Jaguar ad campaign.

When I see something marketed to someone younger than me, my first response is "Huh. That's neat." Followed by "I hope the people who like it get more of it."
(That's how I found out avocado toast is SUPER delicious!)
There's too many people who underneath it all expect the chance to be the boot.
Like, I don't think I'd even notice if a company I buy something from markets their product to people who aren't me, but these people see it as "You're saying we're not the best and most special customer base!" and take offense.
