I've seen other guides suggest steam rather than soaking. I didn't know which method is objectively better, but the steam makes me a lot less nervous.

I guess if a box is extremely beat up, I might try the soaking, but using paint over the print is a no go IMO.

I don't really care about preserving the "original artifact" given the mass produced nature of these things, but I am with you - painting over a printed surface is going to make it look better at a glance, but it will still stand out as touched-up.

I do like the cardboard repair tips, though!

With one exception: White space. Because white is usually not printed, but left out and simply the paint-brushed blank surface of the paper.

The soaking has me wondering about the possibility of steaming a box in an enclosure of some sort. To get the same effect without having to do something so drastic.

This is fascinating. I have seen poster and comic book restoration and this just feels very related. I wonder if people are using a heat press on instructions like folks do for comics?
