(Also: while we are at it, can we eliminate the phrase “I’m leaving the classroom so I can impact more kids” from the discourse? Like, I get it, but let’s be honest: think about how that really sounds to those of us in the classroom.)

In 2019, I left the profession to work in edtech space. My district was actively blocking forward thinking abt teaching & learning. I impact more students now than I was able to do then. But I will never make the same impact as the teacher standing face 2 face with a student. #LetsLearn
Teachers and specialists and paraprofessionals and administrators who work directly with students in schools are the ones who impact students. Full stop. Those higher up the chain influence policy and procedures, but the boots on the ground in schools have the impact.
I recently gave an Ignite talk at a conference that talked about exactly this. I respect the decisions of people who leave the classrooms, but I also think it says a lot about the system we have that forces people to leave the classroom to have a bigger impact. #edusky #mrbos #iteachmath
💯 I think any career positioned “above” teaching - administration, research - absolutely needs to find ways of maintaining a connection to classrooms and a normative focus.
