People who have never had to fight for their own country, for a place to live freely in their own way, rarely understand the true meaning of patriotism.
Patriotism is understanding no country is perfect, but expecting leadership to spend every day in office working to make one’s perfect.
Ignorance is believing your nation cannot be improved upon. That’s what the selfish, corrupt people tell voters so they won’t question or discuss leadership.
I’ve never been patriotic. I’ve been embarrassed and ashamed of this country for long time. The list of why is long. For the first time I feel a bit patriotic. Seems just stupid I feel that way now.
No. That was the perspective of someone who never had to fight for his place in the world.
And a Stalin apologist who dismissed the immense suffering endured by Ukrainians and Poles under Russian occupation.
I believe it is wanting it to be the best and working hard to make that true. (those are the rights given to us by our forefathers)
This also includes defending our constitution and the separation of church and state!
☹️ Only idiots believe their country is “the BEST”. Countries are made up of people with all their human flaws. We ain’t better, we’re just different” should be the Human Motto!!
Yeah, the same one who praised Stalin, dismissed the immense suffering endured by Ukrainians and Poles, and wanted gas chambers for the disabled and poor.
I always preferred Wilde who had brevity. Shaw was a great music critic. Think because of being in performing arts, we never heard that either though an undertone in his work. I looked him up after your comment. What in the world got him to that? And look how Oscar had to suffer in his life.
Love my country’s natural beauty, its accomplishments and the blessings or advantages. Horrified by the idea we’re “better” than other countries. It’s long past time to act as if we are one planet in a cooperative world. People driving around with flapping Confederate flags on pickups don’t get it.
Maybe true a hundred years ago? Patriotism is love of country, and
you may find that some of the most patriotic people you’ll meet are naturalized citizens.
I care about society building, and I am patriotic in the sense that every group takes some type of leadership, and our leaders need to be trusted, yet held accountable at the same time
I don't care what colors the flags are personally.
Actually patriotism is entirely about self and nothing to do with country. It's a way of defining one's identity to oneself: "This is who I am and where I belong." A sense of personal security requires one to feel as if one belongs to a group. The more patriotic one is the more innately insecure.
Patriotism is pride for the honourable conduct of a country in regard to neighbours and residents.
Nationalism is arrogance and insistence on superiority in the face of an absence of supporting facts. That’s the U.S., unless one only considers money, which many only do.
I’d like to change your response patriotism is being proud of the country that you were born in because of the great things that I can do. As I served in the military, I was proud to protect the constitution values that we should continue to hold.
Patriotism is the suicidally mistaken idea that adherence to a 'flag' will give one 'protection' from those who wave other little pieces of cloth woven from differing colours.
I think only the original post. The rest of us seem to get it. It’s not perfect and has done a lot of bad and stupid things but it is HOME &!FAMILY! That’s what we love and defend. Maybe loving anything “warts & all” is the essence of patriotism. 🤔 For too long, we have tried to hide our warts. 😔
Not by my definition. My country is (was) my HOME. My ancestors helped create this country. They weren’t perfect and in truth weren’t always good people but we should honor the sacrifices (whether they were willing to or not) to give us a better home. THAT is patriotism to me. Denying the bad isn’t.
Yes
I remember hearing long ago ,
The ugly Americans , we had come foward not perfect but forward
We can be strong, do what we must do
But fair , respectful and kind leaving dignity alive
Best state of the world is for each and every country to be patriotic for their own homeland. Just because you love your country doesn’t mean you think it’s better than everyone else’s.
I'm quite patriotic due to the fact that my country and surrounding ones have systems that for the most part work and generally benefit the populations.
Patriotism is the feeling of love, devotion, and a sense of attachment to a country or state. This attachment can be a combination of different feelings for things such as the language of one's homeland, and its ethnic, cultural, political, or historical aspects.
He's going off the literal definitions, not the colloquial. Nationalism literally speaking is just the belief that a nation deserves its own state. It only became related to extreme patriotism after 1914.
It wasn't until ~1980's America that anyone started using them separately again.
Also adding Shaw was alive in the 19th century, where nationalism was only seen as a movement for popular sovereignty, and generally a good thing that was anti-monarchist. See liberal nationalism rebellions in 1830 and 1848.
Patriotism is being proud of your country, yet I think the more we know about our countries' histories the more difficult it is to be proud of a nation as a whole.
But we can be proud of specific aspects and cherish them.
Growing up in Germany was special. Like many of my contemporaries I hated to be German and did not know how to cope with it.
After decades I picked some things that I really liked (like our constitution, that's ace and some of my favorite authors are German, as well). It got a little more normal.
I’m Appalachian. I used to be embarrassed to admit that; are seen as backwards hillbillies. Our culture and music are the remnants of the music of Ireland,Scotland England, and Germany. Our “rough” food is the product of surviving on what they could grow or forage. I am proud of those ancestors!
I've never been patriotic until I recognized the threat coming from the south and recognizing how important it is for me to live in a country where my daughter and my Syrian wife are safe from the gouvernent.
Shaw was a Stalin apologist who dismissed the immense suffering endured by Ukrainians and Poles. He also expressed support for the idea of killing the weak and ill in gas chambers.
Patriotism is a feeling of love, devotion, pride and a sense of attachment to a country and it's history and culture. The word itself comes from the greek patriota meaning fellow countrymen.
You're describing chauvinism or possibly jingoism.
He was a Stalin apologist who dismissed the immense suffering endured by Ukrainians and Poles. He also expressed support for the idea of killing the weak and ill in gas chambers.
Yes, I know. But the way the MAGAts rant about "communists" it's really time someone explained to them what they're referring to and it's NOT what they think it is.
This is wrong, Patriotism is the pride you feel for your country when it's doing the right thing. Nationalism is the one where you think you are superior.
Nationalism is a broad spectrum. I'm a Scottish Nationalist, I believe in the right to self-determination, for Scots to reject the hard right policies of the UK Gov. Not all nationalism is bad. Some are a reaction to a bigger totalitarian nationalism. Please be careful how you use the word.
Ah, I understand. I'd never seen/heard it used in a context like that before, I think my view of it has been informed by the conservatives of the US and there is nothing positive about their nationalism. Thanks for the heads up!
Very interesting! I actually did a little Google search before my last response and the positive example that came up was "Scottish Nationalism"! I would definitely support that kind of nationalism, for sure. I learned something new today, I appreciate you offering your perspective. :)
I guess so. So what’s the word for believing in the values and ideals your country is supposed to stand for, supposed to have been founded on? I know they don’t exist today, and may never have, but I’ll fight like hell to get there. That’s patriotism to me, but maybe not the true definition.
I don't know that you can give an objective definition to a subjective idea and I wouldn't challenge you or question your definition. For me, the thing that ties the two together is the focus on one nation, namely ones own nation, and not the human race as a whole
For either one I’d say the problem is pride. Now being proud of where are from for prides sake is problematic. Being proud of what we stand for and what we represent is different. That’s why I need separate definitions.
That separation is, for me, what makes it two sides of the same coin. You just gotta flip a few things over for patriotism to become nationalism.
That being said, I appreciate your take on it. It's very grounded and based on how the real world operates.
I think why the idea of the nation is important is because it’s what we can affect. I have no say in what other countries stand for but I can take a stand here and as a nation we can affect what happens globally, but we have to fix home first. And our home has been corrupted.
Your country is only as good as the people you put in office. If they are bad and corrupt, they do bad things and corrupt our country more with each evil bastard elected.
The famous phrase: "America; love it or leave it". Explain how this Orange Charlatan hates america so badly that despite his negative to leave the country & in lieu of the fact he doesn't love it, he opts for a third route that is to destroy the country. True anti-American misery, who loves company
It most certainly can be...
I don't have that level of arrogance, thankfully, we've been wrong, a Lot. I was proud that we could Help so many around the World.
That's why I fight now. ❤️🔥
Against this purposeful evil intent to harm any & all 💔
No its not. I'm a patriot for canada. I want canada to prosper and for us to be happy. I don't think my country is better than other countries, it's objectively not.
Idk I kinda like the idea of having an allegiance to my homeland and countrymen. Under no impressions this country is superior (or good, atm), just that I love this land and the people who share it with me and our right to live free and govern ourselves in the land we love is worth fighting for.
Yep.
Given what I do (and don't) know, I think several other countries where I've never lived and barely visited are superior in functioning and social quality of life. Unfortunately, they're either too cold for me or too far from family.
Well, this describe nationalism.
Simple difference:
You love your country and want it to be great, to protect it if in danger? Patriotism
You think your country is superior to all others and despise foreigner? Nationalist
think of the latter to be the dark side of the first.
And of course nationalists asses will describe themselves as patriots, ready to kill anybody who criticize them or their beloved country while at the same time betraying the core value of the said country. Like maga eager to shit on freedom of speech, Constitution if this serve their fascist agenda
I think you’re right. Particularly as it concerns the US. We are a credal nation and patriotism here means belief in principals that transcend politics. That whole liberty and justice for all thing, as opposed to nationalism and its focus on blood and soil.
All in 🇺🇸✌️❤️
Narcissistic authoritarian sociopathic pathological liar wannabe king is bankrupting the government by dismantling, weakening it and tanking global economy so he can have COMPLETE CONTROL. Will be sending us to concentration camps like the Jews and Japanese. Let’s nip him in the bud. NOW!
Countries are just made-up lines, only thing that matters are the people that make up the nation
That's why autocrats love to push the idea of that people's duty is to relinquish their bodies and minds for the sake of the country and state -- aka patriotism
How much do you love your country? Are you willing to fight for it? Are you willing to lose your slave wage jobs? Are you willing to die for it?
Put your money where your mouth is, and show us how much you love your country. I dare you to be an American and live free. Speak out, arm up, & show out.
GOP “patriotism” is all your racism, bigotry, misogyny and cruelty camouflaged behind red, white and blue so that your gleefulness at your cruel, evil actions are celebrated instead of stopped. GOPpatriotism is a bully’s privilege.

Carl Schurz, amended 'my country right or wrong" to
“My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.”
Patriotism is the judgement that a particular country is a good deal worth preserving put into action. Being born in it definitely helps.
IOWs, patriotism is proactive. Conviction is more reactive.
In a world where goodness has become rare, there are moments when reason and conscience compel us to shield what little virtue remains.

Nationalists have always been the problem, and ceding patriotism to them has been one of our worse contributions to the state we’re in.
Patriotism says my country can be great. Nationalism says it can’t be anything else.
What I see in America right now scares me too.
Not the definitions now
Or do I misunderstand

I don’t think my country is intrinsically better than any other, I’d just like it to control its own affairs according to its own priorities.

Canada clearly doesn't think it's "superior".
After decades I picked some things that I really liked (like our constitution, that's ace and some of my favorite authors are German, as well). It got a little more normal.
You can love your country without thinking it's superior to others.
It isn’t about superiority, it’s about pride.
You should love your country no matter where you are.
P.S loving doesn’t mean supporting current administration
