A male pharmacist refused to give me my cancer meds. A female pharmacist heard the conversation and came running over and told him to give me the meds.

Pharmacists normally (?always) call the prescribing phyician. If doc not available, dispense few days to week of until talks to doc or cover doc e.g. Opiates, sleep/tranq, benzodiazepines. Pharmacist-prescribed meds are different. I expect pharmacists to work with other HCWs for patients' benefit.

Not refusing - but my pharmacist made a snarky comment about how high the dose of my mental health meds was and I was like “yes, that’s because I’m incredibly mentally ill, thanks”. 🤷🏻‍♀️😬

I was stunned when she said it.
She turned red when i responded and she’s never said a snarky comment again.

Thankfully Im not embarrassed by my mental illness but imagine if she’d said that to someone who felt ashamed or was experiencing suicidal ideation. Just terrible.

Years of battling with various pharmacies on prescribing birth control as decided by my doctor & not whatever generic they had in stock. Continued even after my doc added a no substitutions order. I always had to open the bag, say this is the generic & you need to fill it as prescribed... 1/3

The main time I've agreed with a pharmacist being concerned was when I was prescribed paxlovid & steroids for asthma control. The doc had explained they couldn't be taken together but wanted me to have the steroids in case of emergency if I needed to switch to prioritizing asthma management 2/3

The pharmacist wanted to verify I knew they had very bad interactions & should not be taken together. She seemed uncomfortable but agreed after I walked her through my doc's directions & said she could call to consult. I think she mostly dispensed b/c this was holding up the drivethru line... 3/3

The only times I’ve had a pharmacist refuse to fill a prescription were when they said something to the effect of, “your doctor has apparently forgotten you are allergic to X” or “your doctor didn’t notice this is contraindicated for one of your other meds. “

The only time this has ever happened to me was when I was a teen seeking Plan B bc one of my contraceptives failed. The (middle aged, male, PEI) pharmacist scolded and berated me in public. Thankfully, I was a fairly strong willed 16yo and just told him that that was what I needed, got it, and left.

To be honest, now that I have an amazing pharmacist, it usually goes the other way where he lets me know ALL the info before he fills a prescription and lets me make my choice. Boyd’s is the best, obviously.

I was filling a prescription for Metformin once. The pharmacist looked at it and looked at me (fat) and asked me if I tried diet and exercise instead. I asked her if that would help with the PCOS and ovulation the doctor had written this prescription for. She shut up.

Same happened to me and then they wrote diabetic on my file. I have PCOS and was prescribed metformin to treat it and my fibroids. I had to tell them numerous times I was not a diabetic!

Almost did. The pharmacist disagreed loudly with my HRT prescription (in front of many ppl) but I advocated *firmly* for myself so she gave it to me, and then I moved the scrip to another pharmacy.

Don’t get between me and my hrt just don’t.

They’re in their lane professionally afaik. But it was outdated and it was embarrassing.

It was all the old scares about HRT. My doctor follows the Canadian prescribing recommendations so I said that, and she basically said they couldn’t be trusted. So then I laughed at her and grabbed the bag.

Figures. I talked with a pharmacist who pretty much knew nothing about menopause or hormones and never bothered to educate himself until I did. However, my pharmacist at Boyd's in Halifax is great and knows a lot.

Yes. It was something I’d had an Rx for for years (mental health related). My doc had written me a refill and the pharmacist wasn’t going to fill it because she thought it was “too soon” and went against her “policy”. She called my doc and he insisted she fill it. She hasn’t liked me since.

When I was in my 20s I had a new-to-me pharmacist try to talk me out of filling an Rx for my Depo shot because it would "ruin my fertility". By this point I had already been diagnosed with PCOS and HPV, my fertility was already in the toilet, just give me the damn drug.

Ive not experienced a refusal and I’d wonder about the entire context of the exchange and diagnosis. If there was an undisclosed medication not told to a doctor and a drug interaction could be harmful, than refusal is prudent.

In my experience and at the pharmacy we use, the pharmacists go above and beyond to inform within the scope of their practice and to reach out to us and the prescribing doctor(s) to make sure care is being achieved to the fullest of their ability.

I do know someone who moved and therefore changed to a closer location of their pharmacy. When they were due for their refill (was medication to treat PTSD), the new pharmacist did not want to issue the refill bc they didn't believe the patient. This was a male patient, early 40s

Had the dosages be argued back with the doctor and the doctor get overruled.. by quoting dosage guidelines from whatever literature they used to form the argument.
