Could Jeffery Goldberg have a defamation lawsuit against Mike Waltz?

The reputational damage Goldberg could suffer if Atlantic subscribers believe Waltz' lies is not insignificant.

Comments

You know Trump would have already filed one.
While he should sue for defamation, I'm going to assume most Atlantic subscribers are a little more discerning than average.
Atlantic subscribers will not believe Waltz's lies
He definitely should launch one against Hegseth who defamed him in his interview and the Atlantic should sue Trump for his comments.
He definitely has one against Pete Hegseth.
Well, I would say he should go for it. Worst thing could happen is he loses but the best that could happen is all articles that come out of it about the stupidity of how Trump’s attorneys handle things!
Doubt any subscriber would believe Waltz.
You have my full support in this, Goldberg!!
100% and he should pursue it. The way these assholes are talking about him is defamatory and dangerous. I have no doubt he is getting death threats b/c of the way they are demonizing him and riling up the base/mob with their lies.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
He should 100% sue!
You're forgetting... He has only raised Goldberg's reputation.
Yes
Ha! As an Atlantic subscriber, I’d say we are all sticking with Jeffrey.
Great point!
And against Pete Hegseth who accused him of perpetrating a hoax.
...not only Waltz. Didn't trump, Hepseth and others throw out some defamatory remarks?
I posed that yesterday! I believe he does, absolutely! 🧌
Not just Walz but Hegseth and Bullshit Barbie as well.
They're all calling him a liar. He needs to sue all of them.
I’m taking out a subscription to the Atlantic
He should
🙂
Yep. And because it’s about his profession, it is considered “per se,” meaning he doesn’t have to show damages. He should absolutely sue. I’d represent him, for sure. It’s an easy case from an electronic discovery perspective.
Commerce Secretary also needs to go. I worked since I was 16 and paid into ssa and like most seniors need their ssa to live. We don't have rich relatives to take care of us. I say people need to fight back against trying to steal our money.
I agree. He did not do anything wrong. He could've ex posed this as it was happening. He's the only one with common sense. We need to fight Trump and Musk and Republicans who lie to us.
I would definitely sue waltz DOD,and Trump.
I'm no lawyer (but I play one on Bluesky) but I think you are correct. He should.
I have watched Charlie Kelly’s bird law episode several times and second the motion
So happy to already be an Atlantic subscriber! If not, I would be now!
Lies, lies, and even more lies, sprinkled with a generous helping of "oops, my bad." Welcome to America, where war plans get shared in group chats, and national security is just another punchline!
https://aiwillybillhuman.substack.com/p/trump-administrations-ultimate-spy
You can’t believe a word that this administration speaks. Personal attacks, lies, misinformation and obfuscation is thier MO
But good luck finding a US based lawyer to go up against the Regime.
@marcelias.bsky.social
👍🏻
Nope. Because the truth behind this soap opera would be revealed.

Goldberg’s role is suspect, you don’t stumble into a signal chat, not once but twice, with the HIGHEST LEVEL FOLKS IN THE MILITARY, BUT FOR THE FUCKING PRESIDENT and then act like Little Bo-Peep, now do ya?
I agree but this makes me want to subscribe!
Go for it Goldberg. Wipe the floor with his ass!
And Hegseth and Trump and everyone else involved in this debacle.
Oh and this thing was got me to buy a subscription to The Atlantic.
YES!!!
No one will be held responsible except for Goldberg, somehow.
I absolutely think so. He's essentially been accused of espionage against the US. He should sue and demand a public retraction and apology.
History repeats itself yet again...

He's guilty. They are all guilty. They are still gathering MORE chats. He turned what he had over as proof of what he was referring to. It's all there. They have been caught.
Unfortunately nobody believes anything Trump appointees say. The “reasonable man” standard would say anyone within earshot should know Waltz is lying if he speaks, period. Like it’s satire….
I just subscribed yesterday so does that make me a premature antifascist?
🤣
😂
What lies?
Certainly a possibility.
I think most discerning ppl would see through Waltz’s smokescreen - it’s CYA
Hell yeah!!! Sue the fuck out of them
I think The Atlantic readers have the critical thinking skills that MAGA either doesn't have or chooses not to use.
The Atlantic will not lose subscribers over this, but a defamation lawsuit sounds like a good idea.
I think we'll see an increase in Atlantic subscriptions.
The problem with defamation is these comments are a) opinion of a famous person, as a journalist or b) doesn't quite accuse enough to not be considered a lie.

A defense is Goldberg emerged correct, more famous & his reputation went up.

But worth running passed a jury.
Except who would believe these assholes? Not anyone erudite enough to read the Atlantic.
I’m not a lawyer, but…Goldberg is a public figure, so a defam suit would be tough. Also, Waltz’s smear was pretty general—hard to classify as true or false. And would Waltz have some kind of protection from suit as a government official?

I’d be happy for clarification or correction on any of that.
🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Absolutely! I would sue the everlovin shit out of every one of them.
I 💯% agree! It should be filed already.
I hope he does, I hope he sues them all. Fox News and lyin Leavitt. They have said horrible things about him
You know they are going to go after Mr. Goldbergs reputation full force He should file defamation against them.
I wonder this as well. He should sue. Maybe he’s giving them more time to gang themselves?
Agreed
Yes he could
Defamation per se doesn't require damages
Goldberg would face a big challenge trying to prove there were a substantial number of MAGA readers of the Atlantic.

He has a case for defamation of course, but I would wager none of the Atlantic readers trust Mike Waltz to be honest.
OR IS SIGNIFICANT.
I would bet Atlantic subscribers see this for what it is.
Straight up deflection of the worst kind.
Love your shirt Chef

Ten days in general population will take care of it
Sue musk and the drunken rapist too
The Houthis might even have a case for being left out of the loop ffs.
I think he should sue the MFers!
I hope so. Goldberg’s phone number didn’t insinuate itself onto Waltz’s phone contact list and then invite itself into the chat.
Looks like it to me.
Yes, Slander is still a crime for now we hope!
And Hegseth
He should sue
Would anyone who read The Atlantic believe Waltz?
Shit. Would love to see Goldberg bring it to court and watch the trump govt argue it wasn’t confidential or sensitive info and then refuse to provide it because it’s confidential sensitive info
💯
That’s what I wondered…
Yes. Hold them accountable with the tools available to do so.
In a normal world, yes. Here in magaland, doubtful.
Short answer, yes definitely.
Lol, with the coward law firms we have in this country, who would even want to represent him?
Hope he makes a ton of money
Seems like an open and shut case to me
Yes. Sue the living fuck out of the bastards.
Goldberg needs to sue just like Trump wants to sue everybody
No one believes Mike Waltz.

Hopefully Jeff Goldberg has screenshots of that illegal chat.
He should sue every one of those on the call that said he was lying.
The stupidity of someone who would believe Waltz over Jeffrey Goldberg would also not be insignificant.
The Atlantic will see subscriptions skyrocket, as they should. I, for one, last night. Thank you Jeffrey Goldberg!
I’ve tried twice to subscribe this morning and can’t complete it.
System is s lo w .
Chef Sam he filed something and our favorite. Judge B got the case who trump hates🙃
The Atlantic released the transcript of the conversation.
I think we have a clear case that Waltz' pants are aflame
💯💯💯 This is the 🍊💩's favorite tactic, especially against news agencies, it now needs to be used against them so they finally learn.
I see a law suit with both Hegseth and Waltz coming if not I’d be surprised due to the slander they both brought against Goldberg
I’m a retired nurse legal consultant and have worked in law firm for decades. I say go for it!
I think it would be in his and the Atlantic's interest really. Even Trump got in on bashing him. This degenerate playground bully stuff against news they disagree with needs to stop.
...unless it's calling out false Fox opinions which really made them look bad, I mean really foolish!
Hold them accountable now! Also against Hegseth.
Possibly there is more to come. Many journalists know to release the good stuff a little at a time to counter the attempts to counter their story.

Like how PRISM was leaked out after Snowden sent the info ; it was a bit by bit process to counter the attempts to cover it up.
the criminals-in-charge trying to cover their asses by denigrating the source. This is the modus operandi for tRUMP and the gop, and his gang of hoodlums
Do you think Atlantic subscribers are going to believe Waltz with everything that has come to light? I give them more credit.
or against the White House press secretary after today along with his wife.
Please buy a subscription to The Atlantic if you can afford! They will try yo destroy this publication!
I don’t think those 2 circles intersect
Mr Goldberg should get an apology and a thank you
Is he a billionaire? The government is immune and scotus would probably say that Waltz has qualified immunity to slander citizens
I just hope Goldberg has security!!
Thankfully Atlantic readers and subscribers are too intelligent to fall for that.
I think so!. I'm not a lawyer.
