I one met Prof Heinz Wolf who had a theory that humans required risk in their lives and it was essential, and that the removal of risk from children’s lives was one of the drivers for hooliganism, drug taking and anti social behaviour. He cited tree climbing as necessary for childrens development
Seems to me to make sense that children never exposed to any risk won't learn how to assess situations and make decisions. That means that protection from risk will have to continue into adulthood which seems to be what we are seeing now.
Mind you I am of the generation who was told to go out and play but make sure I was home for tea. There were basic rules like not swimming in the sea on your own and don't go on anybody else's property. I'm still here to tell the tale.
I’m pleased my kids learned about the water at Beau sejour monster island( later stopped I think for H And S) -before I belatedly found out they had been jumping off rocks on the West Coast.
