Having worked in mental health services since the 90s there has been a thread of particular diagnoses being viewed as outside the remit of standard services while not providing alternatives. Sadly alternative provisions feel like they were left to get on whatever that meant.

I agree with you Chris. I have asked my MP to raise it with Government.Provision as part of individual care planning and safeguarding of vulnerable young people needs to be improved.We must learn from good practice,develop ways of improving standards and not keep on making the same old mistakes.

The people running the school - 'The Whitefield Development Trust is registered as a charitable company' . Most SEN schools now are private - funded by money paid by the local authorities who place children there. It is, naturally, a growing business

Use of restraints and seclusion in 'specialist' provision is systemic. Schools don't seek to understand why an autistic person is distressed or overwhelmed (usually provision is not meeting need) and use barbaric levels of force. There are so many children exposed to this harmful practice.

We have a padded room/rooms aa some children when distressed may hurt themselves ie headbutt floor/walls. BUT ours don't have a door, pupils are never alone, always adults supporting these rooms are also therapy rooms so used as a place to support. Ie coloured calm lighting, weighted blanket, music

Soft play equipment, sensory socks, beanbags, spinning seats, all sorts of equipment as needed to meet sensory need. They This footage makes me feel ill. As someone working with complex, mainly non verbal children. I just cannot comprehend this at all.

Sarah, do you ever have pupils who, when anxious and consequently aggressive, need to be held ? Or is there always a distraction technique that works? I used to work somewhere(some time ago) that used calm rooms to avoid restraint.

There is no excuse for deliberate cruelty, but unless you fund such services properly, you end up with very few, poorly paid & poorly trained staff, unsupported by management, doing their best to cope every single day with often very violent behaviour.

I worked as a mental health support worker, supporting vulnerable adults, & there was a stringent no touch policy, let alone push, shove or hit & we certainly didn't lock them in a room, by themselves. I am disgusted.

They never met children's needs. My son never had his needs met for 14 years and these rooms and restraints were just the norm. Now he's 17 and has needs met he doesn't need any of this and is now starting to talk,read and write. His whole childhood wasted. We did battle v hard btw. Massive trauma.

Hoops of fire to jump through with the LA, CAMHS and Ofsted. They like to kick it down the road or sweep it under the rug - expecting Adult SC / CHC to pick up the pieces.

He was saying the odd word every now and then but never repeating it from age 3.

If a school can provide the correct environment and meet their needs it should really help.

We knew it was all in his head but he wasn't given a chance to let it come out. He was just labelled "disruptive".

Yes this is wrong... but children are not all rainbows and unicorns. From primary to secondary attack on staff is at its highest and most of this does not get reported. Training is poor or non-existent when working with high risk children.
