I can promise you AI is a grift. It's not to say someday we won't figure out how to make artificial intelligence, but LLMs are basically just blockchain 2.0. With blockchain most serious companies saw how useless the technology was and didn't bother. But with AI they couldn't due to uncertainty. 1/2

Did ANYONE do anything useful, with remotely broad appeal, using ‘the blockchain’, and could justify its use? I can’t think of *anything*. LLMs? Much more grey area.
But it’s a very niche application with very specific high quality training data.
Then we expect that level of success off bad fan fiction.
The local running open weight models are handy tho. I’m disabled andllama3.3 has been helping me to eat more hot meals.
LLMs can be part of useful tools, but they aren’t the magic they are hyped up to be.
The only way I would trust an llm, like you said, is keeping it local hosted and tracking its connections with something like lulu/little snitch.
Gif directed at “AI” as a term.
The downloadable models are just a file of weights. There no executing code in the model files themselves
It’s the runtime which handle the inference process & that’s open source & verifiably private
I still run it in a container… just incase :)
Now does that justify the valuations? Yeah lol no.
Which is processing text input so that it is better for humans to ingest.
We use it a lot to generate EDR incident summaries, and other methods to reduce user cognitive load.
On the plus side, Google/Msft/Meta all have more money than God, so them burning it on this is I guess some sort of wealth recapture tax....
That's super at odds with the claims and concerns made by everybody. None more than Open AI, but is the most obviously grifty.
GPT o3 is more of an integration of Langchain like reasoning built in, than enormous breakthrough on top of GPT4o
