Who the fuck agreed to any of this. When did we collectively decide to assign random letters to artificially designated “generations” before they’re even born.

For the umpteen trillionth time, humans DO NOT HAVE generations. We are not migratory birds, who are all hatch within a few days of each other, mature pretty much uniformly & then mate to produce the next round.
We have AGE COHORTS, dammit! And that's a mighty fluid construct.
“Generation X” was just a marketing name that meant “undefined generation” and stuck. Marketers tried to name the next one “Generation Y” (yuk yuk) but that was stupid so no one went with it. Gen Z is equally uncreative, but “Zoomer” is a fun play on “Boomer,” so it might have legs.
i keep thinking of how Toronto media mogul Moses Znaimer already started a magazine over 20 years ago called "Zoomer" by which he means baby boomers who are "hip & cool" like himself. That mag is still going afaik, so calling todays teens & 20somethings that will never not be funny to me
ohhhhh i dunno. at least with "Zoomer" magazine he was kind of acknowledging that after he wasn't the young people's media mogul anymore. CHUMCity got bought out by Bell Globemedia ages ago, & print media isn't where the young folks are at.
Mind you i have no real interest in what Znaimer's up to.
Zoomer actually makes sense as these kids did part of their schooling in the pandemic. Babies born after the pandemic should have a name that reflects that, since everyone else alive experienced it.
WSJ in 1885: “It was decreed today in Washington City that heretofore babes born to mothers of this Republic will be a ‘Lost Generation.’ Wheretofore in the present or coming century they will become ‘lost’ will surely become clearer in the fullness of time.”
When two marketing dipshits in love with their own experiences and utterly disgusted by the then current crop of children calculated that those demon babies were the 10th generation since the founding of the US, and gave then a Roman numeral.
So it was a poor (and inaccurate) designation even then.
Generation naming is like the most cringe thing ever. Maybe I particularly hate it because I'm classified as a Boomer along with 80 year olds, God bless'em. But what is it other than just another way to stereotype people?

I don't know how widespread it is, though.
I wonder if he lies awake at night hating the fact that it never really caught on with the boomers & now it's being used on the youths 😹

These people are addicted to a system where they have no new ideas
Under no circumstances would GenZ want their name to be “a fun play on boomers.”
And zoom didn’t define them.
But since it stuck, a ton of people somehow became convinced that generation names work like hurricanes.
God willing, the fact that nobody will actually want to be named after most Greek letters will kill it
So it was a poor (and inaccurate) designation even then.
