here’s a thread for the cosplayers of janky crafting on actual costumes used in film or tv at MoPop so you can feel reassured that even the real stuff has shortcuts and mistakes

I just want you to know I was thinking about those janky Star Trek costumes when I watched a behind the scenes of the Strange New Worlds costume department trying to create a nicer version of the old Klingon Bubble Wrap belt.
I helped pack up a film costume exhibit years ago and yeah it was fascinating to see the wide range of quality. Everything from impeccable and flawless to janky and messy, or both on one outfit depending on which part was getting a closeup.
The number of times people have given me blank, unbelieving stares when I've told them that the "Jedi Trousers" in the Prequel films were just Dockers is close to 100%
But they were just Dockers.
Luke's "leggings" in ANH were blue jeans bleached white with the back pockets ripped off.
I remember when my aunt first got a big, HD tv and was showing it to us, we all realized that it was VERY easy to see which characters were wearing bald caps all of a sudden lol
Tron is always my go-to "a costume only needs to be as good as how it will be seen", because the construction is an absolute mess *but* it's basically made to be seen only in a laser tag arena from a distance
btw please take note that I am NOT mocking any of this work! It all worked perfectly for what it is. The point of the jank thread is to show that even a lot of the stuff used on film has mistakes and it’s FINE cause you can’t see it in photos, so it’s fine if you make mistakes too!
when i worked in professional theatre, the M.O. was also "if you can't see it from the audience, it doesn't matter," which is a lesson i've definitely brought over into costume construction for cosplay, haha
I love this because I’ve seen so, so many high res pics of Darth Maul and I’ve seen the movies and I genuinely did not know this until you pointed it out!!! Darth Maul looking sick as fuck >>> any makeup errors
it’s not currently on display but the same museum I went to hosted some of the pod racing miniatures before and I was just in delight at how GOOD they were!!!
