New internet restrictions at the embattled SSA have cut off access to WIRED, along with other “general news” websites like The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Do I agree with it? No. But I'm also not supposed to be reading the news or going on Amazon at work, so I don't know that it's as shocking as this is making it out to be?
Free speech is being cut faster than ever—banned books, censored discussions, laws targeting dissent. They claim it’s about protection, but it’s about control. When governments decide what can and can’t be said, democracy crumbles. The speed of this crackdown should alarm everyone.
Trump admin taking more cues from China in trying to keep the people ignorant. We’ve got an awful lot of that happening organically (at least 77 million ignorant 2024 voters) without state intervention and cutting off sources of news and information.
They can use their personal equipment. Politico and Axios.👀
“The sources also confirmed that the websites of The Washington Post, The New York Times, and MSNBC were inaccessible. However, the sources were able to access other news websites including Politico and Axios.”
I just checked & I found out that I don’t work at SSA afterall; but can’t read the article b/c it’s behind a paywall. Then I consulted with myself & determined that if I was working at SSA, I would not be reading the news b/c I would be doing 10 people’s jobs trying to get them their social sec $.
Those trying to visit WIRED were greeted with a page replicating much of what was in the initial email. It also listed a “URL Reputiation” score, though it was unclear where that score was being sourced from. Different blocked sites were given different scores. https://www.wired.com/story/social-security-workers-arent-allowed-to-read-this-story/
I guess the score is coming from the same group that can't spell "reputation" even with spell checkers built into just about every possible digital tool.
Similar to the old restrictions at the VA from 98-2005 (roughly) when the internet was new. We were admonished that government equipment was only for government work and web access was limited. It then became clear that we needed internet to do government work. Can people use their personal phones?
They could read it on their phones via mobile, or at home. Atrocious fascism aside, they have private Internet access despite their work-'Net restrictions.
All the more reason to read them daily. NEVER COMPLY IN ADVANCE. They can't search your personal computers at home, nor subpoena your TV watching habits.
That is they can't yet....nothing will surprise me now. Someone said thought police - yupp. 1984 and Brave New World combined to be where we are headed.
There's no guarantee of not being caught, that's very true. I suppose if they violated the Constitutional guarantees against warrantless search that's excellent grounds to resign anyhow. And the lawsuits would have a very interesting "discovery phase" where subpoenaed documents are made public.
lol this is the same kind of idiocy as an executive demanding that PCs are blocked from taking screenshots to stop “leaks”, while there are several billion camera phones on earth
Boo hoo. Sorry, but the major corporation I used to work for wouldn't allow us to use the internet for anything that wasn't related to your job. And there was no need to have access at work anyway.
I work at a public school in Florida and I don’t access anything but school stuff on my computer. My phone isn’t on the public WiFi because the district monitors what you do on their bandwidth.
Trump will ruin the SSA just like his failed businesses! He doesn't care people worked their entire lives paying into ss! Recall, he screwed 100s of contractors & 1000s of workers from his failed casino (read below) while lining his pockets. He wouldn't bat an eye to do it again.
Libraries have been under attack for the last 4 years. Moms for “Liberty” has been leading the effort to ban/censor books and electronic resources and they’re working hard at the state level to change obscenity laws and criminalize library work.

“appears not to be based on ideological grounds, as Fox News and Breitbart are also blocked”
They’re not blocking specific sites, they’re blocking sites that aren’t work-related. You want to read the news? Fine. Use your own device.

They still have phones!

Sure, it’s dystopian, but it’s also about self-preservation in a hostile environment. Use your head!
truth be told… this is why they want Starlink throughout the United States, it is about control, power, and the right to spy

So, if the registered trademark for DOGECOIN is (DOGE)?
Could Musk’s DOGE could capture funds also in the name of (DOGE)?
