Companies in the EU are starting to look for ways to ditch Amazon, Google, and Microsoft cloud services amid fears of rising security risks from the US. But cutting ties won’t be easy.

Not just the cloud services but the platforms themselves. When are we going to get European rivals to Amazon and Google so Europeans can comfortably ditch our former friends?
We used to ask CFO type IT "leaders" if their assessments included the "cost of exit" - because without that you hadn't properly assessed either the product's cost nor the additions to your risk profile.
Good idea. It amazes me how companies repeat the mistake. They get locked in when the service is better and cost is lower. The cost ratchets up and service quality goes down, until the switch is worth the pain. Repeat. You want a separation between vendor and solution, so you can change only vendor.
I’m not surprised. I wouldn’t be surprised if countries using operating systems like Windows start looking into moving off them and towards open source ones, like Linux distros, in the future too.
However we get through this, the rest of the world will still be figuring out ways to get things done without us. They will never be able to trust us again.
I believe in #Europe #UK #Canada, #Australia, #NewZealand, & anywhere in the world #Dump has threatened! Should all join in a #Boycott wherever! Whenever! Possible! avoiding #Google #Apple & #Amazon may be difficult! But avoiding #McDonalds #KFC #PizzaHut #Starbucks etcetera E is really easy!
Nothing worth doing is ever easy. Keeping megalomaniac billionaire bastards from turning your country into what the u.s. has devolved into is worth doing no matter what the cost.
Cloud was always a way to have your info. Not smart to put your stuff in other people/strangers hands but we are forced to & sometimes even responsible if there are problems with these services. They should be responsible for any problems on these things. Oops, your bank lost your money...too bad.
Cutting ties won't be easy *if you made poor strategic decisions in the first place*. If you followed rational (informed) advice you'd not have been adopting any technology set in the cloud that wasn't portable to other providers.
depends how it hosted; if it's built on AWS services, that was a poor strategic decision. But if it's just a bunch of VMs then it's highly portable to any hosting provider e.g. Hetzner, OVH
Smell the Trump taint on you #Bezos and #Zuckerberg? You got in bed with him, the smell doesn’t wash off easily, and now you will lose billions of dollars in business outside the U.S.
Feel slimey? Didn’t really think this through did you?
I already signed up for the European equivalent of the Microsoft cloud, and there are certainly alternatives to Google and Amazon.
So cutting ties are not as difficult as you are suggesting.
We can't trust the US with military secrets anymore, because Trump and Musk will either just give away or sell them to whoever we're trying to defend against.
Scamazon, Google and Microsoft can't be trusted to hold our data either, and not show Musk and Trump it.
Competition is the best way to curtail the monopolistic oligarchy of the lawless US. EU is in a position to encourage other tariff targeted nations to do the same. Watching the world pass us by to leave us in the dung heap of trumping.
When are they going to realize how bad he’s going to be for business? No amount of tax cuts are going to cover it. All they care about is money and they will lose TONS.
The larger agreements have 3-5year contracts, so it will take time for them to lose any big customers. Like the article says, small and medium sized businesses can make these decisions quickly.
This by the way also means that Israel is finished...we are going to be in such big doo doo for so long Israle will be abandoned just like all the rest of our 'so-called-allies'. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly...
“Concerns have been raised about the current data-sharing agreement between the EU and US, which is designed to allow information to move between the two continents while protecting people’s rights.”
Como ja aqui disse, nao vejo como ele consiga sobreviver.
IT and software engineering is a cyclical beast. First we had individual computers liked together in a building connected to the web. Then we had satellite departments on light weight connection. To reduce hardware costs we moved everything to cloud and gave our IPR away freely.
We're all on bluesky because of how musk used/changed twitter. People will flock to a well run alternative and leave Amazon web services in the dust as well.
When you control your own keys, things like access, complexity, key rotation, and everything else related to security and compliance of those keys is your problem.
Some orgs consider that a greater risk than government interference.
Europe has an obvious Achilles heel and that is its obvious lack of innovation. There are no breakthroughs in technology or science in Europe compared with the US or China.
If that is not corrected you're doomed to vote to one of them
Finally, realization it's not safe. That has been true since companies put their data on severs or cutsie name, cloud, controlled by a private company. Those severs are easy picking. I hope data can be moved quickly.
It's difficult to extricate oneself from Google, Amazon, Microsoft & Meta. They're so embedded in all our devices... phones, smartTv, laptops, desktops... it's easier said than done & involves a degree of separation from the familiar. It's also socially isolating, in a way.
It’s not going to stop with cloud services. From parts to maintenance that come with defense purchases too. Travel and hotels will struggle. Jobs? Who’s coming here to work low paying jobs with no benefits as it guts science, medicine, and higher education? America was on easy mode.

Long overdue.

Ahhhh, Too bad. All those companies should pop open some of that real but fake Trump Champagne

Learn from Sherman's mistake; don't just burn, salt the earth.

This is what happens when massive companies are allowed to control the cloud.
Even if you move your data, some apps are SaaS only.
You should also be using private keys to prevent the cloud service from being able to view or hand over your data.
Risk.

But it’s not just getting rid of O365 and Dropbox when you’re talking about IT for a multi-billion dollar enterprise.

Now he’s imploding the tech sector too. Everything he touches turns to 💩.
But then again… They should have known better. #Karma
