Everyone is talking about Netflix’s 'Adolescence' and how the manosphere is shaping young men. But its influence goes beyond teen boys. Revisiting our WIRED piece on how this same online ecosystem helped fuel Trump’s 2024 victory:

capitalism is deeply intertwined with patriarchy, unfortunately, and it will burn this earth to the ground. when the next antithesis happens and the pendulum swings away from the manosphere, it'll be too late, ecologically speaking.
I haven't watched it (yet?), but I saw an interview with one of the writers basically trying to spread out the blame for boys being fucking awful to the rest of society and wow is that shit old and tired. Everyone is responsible for themselves except little white boys!
The sad truth is many caught up in the manosphere are people of colour. And its also true that there is a complex assortment of push and pull factors involved that requires an all-hands-on-deck societal effort to address. We cannot individualize this issue and leave it there.
Completely agree. Definitely not saying we shouldn't deal with it. Something needs to be done. My concern is we only create some special snowflake programs to address their needs while continuing to ignore or demonize everyone else's, regarding this issue or any other that causes societal problems
When I heard it was Gen Z males who are driving so much of this, it shocked me. I'm old, but they're not, yet don't have much of a future to look forward to given the destructive nature of this regime.
misogyny is as old as the world, there's no reason to assume this generation of men would be the odd one out that somehow doesn't hate women. they all do
I am afraid for my son. He just spouted some scary sound bites during a discussion of what's happening in the US, and even denied Ellon's n@zi salute. He has been radicalizated by the far right dudebros on social media. He has daughters... This hurts my heart.
And if we look at the holders of the vast majority of the world’s wealth? Men. So many men—from Trump and Musk and Putin to every CEO, crypto schmo, and solar bro in between.
Also, the assumptions made in developing the brotech we all end up using. Like, if Black women built online environments it would be a lot safer and tons more fun.
Not as many women seem to have the same need to bolster their egos by accumulating wealth as men, it would appear. In my experience they don't, in general, lack the drive, focus or intelligence to enrich themselves.
"87 percent of billionaires around the world are men, and women continue to be vastly, outrageously outranked in executive positions within the tech industry."
no, that's the logical end result of capitalism. capitalism values accrual of capital and endless growth, this is what the only possible end point of that drive
As someone who was once in the manosphere and made it out I'm not hopeful sadly. The various push and pull factors driving boys and young men into the hands of manosphere types are so strong. And I see no evidence of the all-hands-on-deck society-wide effort needed to address it.
