Bro they've invented hashtaggable genres and rush "books" out to cater to said "genres" while they're "going viral" ... Just whaaa. Cherry on top is that people probably don't even read any of it just buy the physical media to show off and perpetuate the cycle
Funnily enough a lot of this stuff has always gone on in publishing - Walt Whitman self published so many editions of Leaves of Grass to build hype, just for one example - but I think BookTok does really prize aesthetics over meaning. The form isn't good for in depth discussion or review
Hah that's really interesting to know about Whitman. You're right, and a lot of famous authors did pad their writing because they were paid by the word 😅 I guess I just think that tiktok really amplifies these downsides of publishing
I'm 35 this year (is that old yet?)
And i hate it
I will never adjust my thinking
i will always look down on anyone willing to clockwork orange themselves for hours a day
you’re right though, and i’m very attached to knitting tiktok and cool niche knowledge vids but also i know that society in general would be so much better if short form video apps didn’t exist

Sorry but that is how it is
Honestly message boards with current participation levels might be too much.
And there's some extremely talented content creators I enjoy
But I scroll past the other 95% of what's on there
