It also appears to distracted the "Automata is gooner game" crowd, thank god. You play a Yoko Taro game to get off. You play it to experience wholesale existential dread.
I've kept my post-Nier existentialism to myself, so its taking me a second to truly process that there are people in the fanbase who haven't played the Nier games...like why you here bro p̶l̶e̶a̶s̶e̶ ̶d̶o̶n̶t̶ ̶s̶a̶y̶ ̶i̶t̶s̶ ̶2̶B̶s̶ ̶b̶u̶t̶t̶
I’ll never forget the day Grummz got dumpstered by the Monster Hunter fandom cause he pretended to be a disgruntled fan calling MH Wilds “woke” and they looked through his tweet history and found that it was the first time he had ever talked about Monster Hunter
I might warn that opinions tend to be divided. Mine are starkly negative, but I know I'm a minority and many people adored it. I think the key was I didn't ever find myself caring about the feelings/safety of the characters getting hurt.
The video game culture war is frustrating from both sides. Not being centrist - the real leftist opinion is why can't we have character design like in the Nier/Drakengard series where women may or may not be sexual and that doesn't dictate whether they can kick ass or not.
honestly agreed one does not contractict the other i’m mainly referring to people using automata to « own the libs » when the literal themes in most yoko taro games goes completely against every ideology they stand for 😭
I think Yoko Taro is like a normal person if the culture war didn't exist. Take Kaine as a good example of character design he's not afraid to put her in Nier but also her existence as a character isn't entirely based around her gender identity.
I get this. I do hope that all the tie in's Automata has had would bring people who actually want to play it and experience the story too though. I shouldn't talk as I still need to finish Automata and Replicant. They are both fantastic games, but this backlog of games is killing me.
Stellar Blade suffers from the first 3/4 of the game trying to be Nier/Automata. The final 1/4 it starts cooking its own ideas and they’re really freaking good! And then it’s over. I agree w/ Yora about Stellar Blade 2 probably being an outstanding game. I still recommend Stellar Blade 1 though.

This is probab the only in-depth review I've seen. Tbf Mark also is not a fan of RE4R, so you'll have to use your better judgment.
the combat is pretty solid and has depth but that’s pretty much all the game has for going for it, i think stellar blade 2 if it happens might be a much better game
It’s a good game. Not great, but not terrible. The gameplay can be a lot of fun and flashy as hell, the graphic style and world design is solid, and the story, while fairly unoriginal as a whole, is entertaining enough.
This is pretentious I know but I really need a great story like “last of us” for example. It doesn’t have to be on that lvl obviously but is it worth playing?
I mean, it ain’t gonna be Last of Us. Not even touching that. It’s not a bad story just not the most original, I was calling most of the major story beats at one point or another but still enjoyed the presentation and the journey.
My first play through j would have agreed but with the updates and learning the hold triangle attacks actually stun enemies I actually think the combat system might be better than sekiro. Would have to replay sekiro to confirm. Either way it’s very good. Shame it got co-opted by the crazies.
I think Sekiro is a bit tighter because overall it has less options but is extremely tightly designed in the options it has. SB has a broader variety of ways to handle things.
Either way both insanely good combat systems, they have the same DNA that’s a blast once it clicks for you.
A fickle line to walk. We must not alienate the gooners, for without them, how can we appreciate the deadly beauty of an android with giant cheeks in the throes of a psychological battle over her own existence?
I've only ever seen one or two short videos of gameplay that people have actively shown and it looked pretty fun. Other than that it's just people "talking" non stop about how sexy Eve is or whatever and it's so annoying and off-putting if I'm being honest
I hope this means that eventually Replicant will get it's time to shine. That- and lore discussion will become more prevalent for the series as a whole. The NieR subreddit was genuinely a hellscape a couple of months ago due to people who didn't actually play the games swamping it.
i think it’s too late for replicant to be popular, it does not have the visual mainstream appeal that automata has and honestly that’s not really a flaw that’s what gives it its charm imo
Ahh, true I guess. It saddens me that Replicant won't ever get that popular- but it'll never change the love I have for that game either way. Just hope Yoko Taro doesn't let its success stop him from trying out new visual ideas and the like, or stop him from returning to a more Medieval setting.

Stellar is just not on PC yet
I, for one, welcome our YORhA overlords.

If you're in it for the story and characters then no need to play it.
If you're in it for the combat and general vibes then definitely give it a try.

Any advice to get me back in?
