Why did you vote for the xenophobic Laken Riley Act giving Trump & the GOP more power to violate human & constitutional rights? Setting the groundwork for them to unlawfully deport immigrants *accused* of crimes without due process. Did you cover that at the Town Hall? Shame on you.

In the Linn County town hall, her answer was something along the lines of holding "criminals" accountable. She was also glad questioner told her he had Vietnamese-American family. As if caring about due process as a principle is less valid than caring because you have an affected family member.

Meanwhile—Trump is sending immigrants with no criminal record to a forced-labor prison in El Salvador. She voted for xenophobic legislation that is designed to terrorize immigrant communities and she hasn’t apologized for it.

It was more of a non-answer / evasion. One of the problems with the town hall format that we have is that they try to keep the mics moving after the question is asked but before the answer is given, and it doesn't hold them accountable for giving strong answers.

What disappointed me is that @repbynum.bsky.social doesn't seem to have a framing which understands Laken RIley in terms of the administration's broader agenda. Or she's just for it, personally. She is missing that we did not vote for her as much as we voted against Lori DeRemer.

I don't dislike her, but she strikes me as a politician who belongs in a universe where Harris won in a landslide, MAGA came to their senses, and we found ourselves suddenly in the political landscape of the early Obama years where the stakes felt much lower.
