Well, I'd hazard a guess it has something to do with the way politics and mass media shifted hugely to TV and its accompanying stunts in the early 60s. Nixon actually came over really badly in a famous debate with JFK so perhaps he was trying to change or build his image.

I saw this and thought of the time during a campaign where I saw a photo of now former MP Steve McCabe pointing at something, made a transparent cropped version, and then photoshopped him into various photos of world events, including with Nixon. Enjoy the odd output of my campaign-addled brain.

He was VP in basically the first TV administration and was a giant dork who had to carry a lot of the public work for a very boring and borderline geriatric -- though *highly competent* -- POTUS.
