Here's a story that illustrates why primary sources are important & how Black history is whitewashed.
It involves a mass slave escape, Government-sponsored slut-shaming, my nomination for the Blackest name in history & the guy who discovered two words that might end racism.
A thread.

1. How many people were enslaved on this property?
2. How many people lived "the big house"?
3. When did the last person live in one of the slave cabins?
The answers were always the same
On the plantations I visited, people lived in the slave quarters until the late 1980s or early '90s
But we always hear the story of the WHITE PEOPLE
That's LITERALLY how history is whitewashed
That's not a typo
During the American Revolution, this was where Black people signed up to fight. It was the HQ for the Mass. 55th during the Civil War
But my favorite story is the story of the two William McLeods
The 1st William McLeod was a Confederate slaveowner who owned the property and fought for reparations
Not that kind
According to the SC Auditor's Confederate claims, 10 people on the McLeod plantation were self-emancipated that night.
White Willie wanted his money back.
