Finally playing Case of The Golden Idol and honestly, forget GOTY/Game Awards conversations, go play an old game you might've missed. Don't let a calendar year keep you from finding an all time fave.

That's how I felt about Inscryption a couple months ago. I almost didn't play it because there were too many new games, but I ignored that feeling and it ended up being one of my 2024 games of the year
That's an underrated gem. I'm currently playing its sequel, and the folks over at Color Gray Games sure know how to tickle my brain and make me feel as if I'm the smartest person alive.
I played it with my partner when it came out and we have just finished the second one. Both amazing and deeply entertaining. Have you heard about 'Return of the Obra Dinn'? I highly recommend that one.
This. That game- & the sequel, Rise of the Golden Idol- are two of the best games I've ever played. There were times I audibly gasped at story beats I genuinely would never have expected. It's a damn shame RotGI released at an awkward date re: TGAs, because it'd be a shoo-in for Best Narrative Game.
My GOTY lists always include old games lol
Some of my favourites I played this year include Bomberman '93 (TG-16), Dragon Warrior II, III and IV (NES), Pokemon X (3DS) and Super Mario Odyssey!
Started playing it last sunday, and it's been a great experience, amazing game, really cool concept and execution. It really makes your imagination and thoughts be focused on the game while you play, which I don't see often.
Not got into too many of this year's games, but I've played stuff like Super Metroid and Xenoblade. Honestly the older games have carried the year for me.
For the first time in a long time I’m focusing on a game not from this calendar year. I’ve never played the Kingdom Hearts games before and I’m checking them out!
we need a form of content that’s GOTY but you’re not allowed to go to the next year until you finish one year and the content is like 3 - 5 years of just 2019 for example.
I'll sometimes scrub back through old GOTYs just to get the opinions on games I get to late. "Shadow of Mordor was neat as hell, how'd it come off at the time?"
Playing Death Stranding for the first time for similar reasons! (Finally on Xbox) always good to find something that clicks instead of chasing what’s new.
I think it depends on what mood you are in. Gris (haven't played Neva) is a really beautiful and slow paced game while Case and Rise are puzzle, mystery solving games. Different alleys, I would say.
Doing this with the Binding of Isaac right now, and by that I mean the OG flash version of the game. It is *so* good, 10/10, would recommend to anyone even slightly interested in roguelikes! There's a reason this game in particular got so huge after all.
I played Spiritfarer too late for my GOTY talks the year it came out. Played it in January the following year and was like, “Whoops, this is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.”
i think a lot of people skipped it because until recently the only good way to play it was via Steam but it sounds like this year they put out a console update that fixed a lot of issues
And, lastly, if you want to play the new Dragon Age I would recommend playing Inquisition before. The first and second Dragon Age games are not that related to it, but Veilguard is the direct 'sequel' to Inquisition (specifically to one of its dlcs).
It's currently free on Game Pass (maybe paying for a month is less expensive than getting the legendary edition) and it's totally worth it. Being able to pass your character from game one, to two, to three, with all the decisions and consequences... Chef's kiss.
I might not be impartial here but... Please, play Mass Effect. The Legendary edition includes the original trilogy and all the necessary dlcs. And you can experience the first game with a different visual quality (I played the original and the new one and the story is essentially the same).
I can't count how many people slept on Disco Elysium, and that's from just a few years ago. Admittedly the publisher went right to hell due to scumbag business stuff, but the game remains one of the best of *all time*, never mind a specific year.
Great advice. I’ve only played 2 of this year’s GOTY contenders, Astro Bot and Balatro. But last week I rolled credits on case of the golden idol, shadow of the colossus and disco elysium which are all now some of my favourites
Thank you for saying this and letting people know lol, playing older games is usually cheaper and also awesome! Even just waiting for price cuts on games from the previous year is worth it imo
Exactly. I found plenty of great games that I didn't get a chance to play over the past few years that have quickly become some of my favorites! It's liberating to enjoy something older or smaller.

At least they are supporting it all next year, DLC for 2025 GOTY!
And for people who are on the fence about trying them they're available through Netflix.

I have it on my Xbox wishlist
