My old iPhone 8 Plus ran fine but would no longer hold a charge for longer than a few hours.
I forked over $1,000 for a new 16 pro and it will hold a charge all day.
Planned obsolescence is real.

30 steps might seem like a lot, but some steps are alternate processes or just informational

Had no choice but to upgrade my perfectly good iPhone 8 to a 12 primarily for the same charge reason as you Byron.
Less than 80 thousand miles but I’d be surprised if we drive it 5 more years because expensive stuff will fail. It’s built to fail.
So, and ipod? Not really comparable to a phone anymore.
Never felt so free and powerful 🙂
that said iphone batteries seem to degrade unusually fast compared to others from all that I've seen
Both apple and Samsung seemed to have battery degradation that far outpaced the norm, when I had a repair shop.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/108055
That said, I've seen huge variation in degradation over various generations. Example: My mom's was 98% after 2 years while mine was at 79%. Same model. 🤷♂️
Thank you so much.
I replaced mine last year with a refurb iPhone 12 http://backmarket.com
But then, I am also sad that having µSD card slots and headphone sockets is rare now too, even on android. iPhone users never had the first two....
Work on making it easy to replace a battery.
If you still have your old phone, you can get it back in working order yourself in an hour or two for $30

it ain’t broke if it doesn’t exist
SSBs and graphene arent really ready for prime time yet and certainly weren't in prodcution for phones at the 8's release.
And that proposal would make the phone either 50% larger or have 50% less capacity....
Probably same reason apple "geniuses" charge more for repairs than buying new.
Along with deferred charging while at night (it slowly charges only close to your alarm)
Sure they could still make batteries easier to swap - but it’s something at least.
I wish my Android could do that..
You can't charge to 100%, get 10 years out of a battery, and buy thin... You know there are people who value thin phones
One is just time, some chemicals break down over time.
One is temperature, if it is hot or cold it accelerates chemicals break down
And one is state of charge.
I would need data to back up decades.. it is wrong
Do you really believe that? Even despite the lawsuits and performance graphs showing a clear difference between other systems?
Does Google somehow change the laws of physics for their phones?
This is crazy. I have to take it completely apart, risking to damage some parts
And I don't see how this is different, when somebody does it professionally. Still risky
1.All lithium ion battery tech degrades over time.
2. Apple does battery repairs as long as the phone doesn’t have any other damage that would cause issues with the repair.
3. Make an appointment at the apple store. Go to appointment. Checkin for repair. Pay fee leave.
Honestly its not that complicated though. If you have the tools. Technicians do the repair in like 8-10mins. The rest of the time is spent is post repair diagnostics. 13-15min process if everything goes smooth.

Its like working on a new bmw or mercedes it only seems crazy if you dont have the tools.
The op blocked me for my original response to you btw. I didnt think i was being a jerk but sorry if i offended anyone i gues🤷🏽♂️
My point is that batteries are easy to replace. Apple doesn't make it hard.
Why do people think Apple products work well despite the ample evidence to the contrary?
But you missed the entire point.
Also. We've had waterproof electronics before Apple came along. 🤷🏻♂️
How are you mad a $900 purchase lasted 7 years???
It’s all a grift.
I’ve been using an xr since late 2018. The battery started dying earlier this year…affected performance. So I got a new battery and it was great again.
If that’s the only issue, and it’s replaceable, it’s really not a strong argument for ‘planned obsolescence’
Let's just say it's being on the wrong side of Moore's Law
Outpacing expected battery life / physical limitations of the battery by a factor of 2-3 does not support that argument.
Anyway enjoy your new phone ☎️
Not sure if this is the iOS 18 update or something else. Had it almost 4 years.
Manufacturers also know batteries wear out, and not letting them be replaced/making it as hard as possible to is an intentional decision.
Just click the three dots on one of their messages and choose "see less of this" or something to that effect.
If we all do less people will be bothered in the future.
Also, I don't do apple (or Chinese) anything on principle!
The comments, blissfully ignorant of the lawsuit apple lost for downclocking their devices as they age.
Apple could make battery swapping easier, ofc.
