There's no reason to ever implement text highlighting this way, using the bounding box of each word and not highlighting spaces. If you hit ctrl-c (or cmd-c) after the highlight, it would copy the spaces between the words too. It should union all highlights in the same line into one highlight.

This is explored in great detail by David F. Greenberg in his book "The Construction of Homosexuality". There are exceptions, but societies with deep misogyny tended to have restrictive rules for and against homosexuality, but more egalitarian tribes such as the Celts were often very bisexual.
