a staggering number of our elite institutions across the entire spectrum of politics, business and education just decided to give up without a fight, which is a reason that most of them need to be completely reformed

It's so fucking frustrating, because the amount of pain the institutions would've endured for stopping him using the clearly outlined processes for stopping him would've been minimal.
Well, yes and no. The prisoners dilemma is that collectively the institutional actors could easily assert their authority but the first couple to step up are going to get absolutely destroyed. Everyone's waiting for someone else to volunteer as tribute.
A lot of those institutions are run by people who've been looking for an excuse to do this without damaging their reputations and they couldn't be happier to tie their own hands behind their backs
That’s my take on a lot of this, the institutions were already corrupted. We think of universities as hotbeds of liberalism, and that’s often true of students and faculty, but university administrators are all about money and power. Same with a lot of BigLaw etc. Trump just revealed the corruption.
In any repressive regime, there is a large number of ppl and institutions that are too squeamish to openly side with the repression, but secretly enjoy the fruits of it.

It goes from a minor inconvenience for an institution to an existence struggle, because some fuckers are too cowardly to take a small risk
If institutions had stood up *earlier* when they were supposed to, it would’ve been a minor inconvenience
Oh well, I hope I can skeet from RFK jr's trans work camps
They don't have principles, only interests.
