With Trump’s deregulation gutting key oversight agencies, food safety risks are rising. The recent lawsuit against the Girl Scouts over heavy metals in their cookies highlights a deeper issue: when companies face fewer penalties, cutting corners becomes easier — and consumers pay the price.
My leftwing mother, may she rest in peace, called the Girl Scouts a right-wing paramilitary organization. Leadership, at least at that time in the 70s, was very right-wing indeed. BTW 35% of cookie money goes to the 'baker,' 65% to the regional council, 10% to that troop. Seems like a racket.
Look, I have no opinion on the merits of this case but if one of the groups that's suing you for something like this is called "Moms Across America," you gotta be skeptical. These mom groups are fucking insane. Just a bunch of bored housewives mainlining conspiracy influencers 24/7.
Not sure. They seem sketchy as hell though. They classify themselves as a non-profit but they're 100% a wacko anti-vaxx, anti-GMO outfit that also peddles non-FDA approved supplements and other quackery.
Stopped buying a long time ago because of their use of palm oil in their products, instead of alternatives that don't lead to deforestation and burning of orangutan habitats...
What I'm reading though, other vegetable oils wouldn't lead to more deforestation of the lands the orangutans rely on. So from the perspective of saving orangutans we should move away from palm oil.
Under RSPO, deforestation is prohibited. That is why conservationists, particularly orangutan conservationists, support only #SUSTAINABLE palm oil. A move away from palm oil would lead to more deforestation, not less. https://bit.ly/3jkpvvh
“If palm oil is banned, companies or governments might turn to other crops, which might replace palm oil’s role in deforestation [or even worsen it] in Indonesia and elsewhere." - Kiki Taufik of Greenpeace Indonesia
Jane Goodall: “You can’t say ban palm oil altogether because vegetable oil is needed and it might mean even more land destroyed to grow other kinds of vegetable oil so the solution is to have palm oil from sustainable plantations.”
Can the girl scouts just use canola oil produced in the US and Canada though? It seems Girl scouts don't use 100% sustainable palm oil anyway, just a mix?
We haven't looked in depth at Girl Scouts' sourcing, but understand there are more than one baking manufacturer supplying the cookies, which may have different sourcing. If they are only using "Mass Balanced" (mixed) and not "Segregated" or "Identity Preserved", we would indeed encourage them...1/
Manufacturers say that canola oil is not ideal for baked products like cookies because it is not solid at room temperature and does not have the long shelf life associated with palm oil.
They found traces of heavy metals in all sorts of chocolates last year. Didn’t see anyone getting sued by this group then. Gee do you think it might have to do with the Girl Scouts accepting everyone?
The Girls Scouts don’t make these. Two Factories (ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers) that make all kinds of cookies and products do, in SD and KY. This is BS because depending on the GS council in the area where she got her cookies, either could have produced them in NY where the suit filed.
I predict the corporation will face no fines, but the girls themselves will have to empty their piggy banks. Such is oligarchy. "Sacrifices will have to be made"

Now then, are the cookies safe or not.
