Note that we start with Anna, not Clarissa. For many readers, Anna’s the more compelling character, at least at first. She’s vivacious and imperfect. It’s Anna who will influence, eg, Elizabeth Bennet. Clarissa the paragon will prove to be a much more challenging figure in literary history.
