Agreed, but I'd go further and emphasize that we'll be operating in the world he bequeaths. We can't revert to a world people inside and outside the country trust us. All we can do is try to be worthy of trust and restore faith in mutually beneficial transactions, which will take time.

I used to work in a big lab. My partner works in one. Seeing America shutter immigrants out of science & higher education is infuriating but will also be poetic justice. I just hope America doesn't have to go through a whole racist dark age to get to enlightenment.

I am not so sure. The technology nowadays is far, far more advanced than fifty years ago. Catching up will require not just a lot of talented people but also a vast system that can enable them to work together. But, yeah, where there is a will there is a way.
