The focus on TikTok as a source of foreign propaganda misses the point. The real threats are the ability for a hostile foreign adversary to install malware and to collect private data that could be used to leverage Americans.

But what about the American companies doing the same thing? (Cambridge for example). I always think the world of your insight. But you can see why a large swath of your fellow citizens seem a bit confused.
It’s the hypocrisy of focusing on one but not the others. The whole reason the Biden Admin is against TikTok is because of Zionist pushback on seeing their war crimes documented and disseminated. They killed most of the journalists in Gaza and yet can’t control the message w TikTok still out there.
Like they do on 'X', and will soon on FB? Sadly, those collectors of data/attempted manipulators aren't exactly 'foreign', but is that really a comfort?
That's true, isn't it.. that's how Zuck got so rich. I'm sure the 'new and improved' FB will be Trump-worse, but that won't really be a feature of how much worse they get.
This discussion should include a deeper discussion about Apple’s and Google’s software that allows apps to collect too much data - maybe even beyond what the app’s data-collection policy states.
It didn't take a political slapfight for me to realize from the get-go that tiktok was baaaaaaaaad news. Facial recognition, audio monitoring, location tracking... all being given away FREELY.
Nevermind that it's obnoxious and culturally toxic. Nthx, the internet.
What’s obnoxious about it and how is it culturally toxic? I found my pages to be political activism, some fun skits (commiserating as retail workers a lot) and talk about books and 80’s music…
What "hostile foreign adversary"? Chinese ability to out-compete US corporations does not make them "hostile". But surrounding another country with warships is another matter.
They don’t need Tik Tok to do that. Advisories have been spearfishing those in office and adjacent with a good degree of success. The Tik Tok kerfuffle is because Zuckerberg and Musk are getting their asses kicked in the market.
We need a new government agency of source code readers that preserve rights of companies while ensuring no malware is embedded, and no changes made using code-signing algorithms. Private data is thornier.
We get plenty of disinformation from MSM, and Facebook.
Too late. The malware from our domestic terrorist has already leveraged Americans into oligarchy. The trumptechbros are as much or more of a threat than China.
What about benign countries installing malware for the same purpose? Does the flag of the country doing it mean anything any more? Why not concentrate on the behavior rather than the flag?
As Zuckerberg & Musk cozy up to 47, they divert our focus onto TikTok and the Chinese government. I’m more concerned about the close relationship developing between Elon & Mark, two individuals with access to the most data in the world, & a lawless narcissist with an axe to grind, 47.
So, of course, we all run to redbox(or whatever it's called) and shop on the temu site! China keeps banking that younger folks don't know their history! And China is correct!
Question, and what will they learn that they haven’t already learned from all of us whose identities have already been bought and sold on the dark web ? Inquiring minds would love to know
Let me explain. Facebook was bleeding users to the much more popular and innovative TikTok, so Zuckerberg is paying Trump to shut it down or give it to him.
On that broad point, the same standard should also be applied to ALL "AMERICAN OWNED" companies that collect private data, not just the most popular ones... GREED obviously "trumps" national interests...
That's why I'm confused about all the focus on propaganda. My issue has always been data collection. Far more dangerous. The US needs to get strict privacy regulations in place. Some states are doing it, but we need a federal mandate. Going to be even tougher now w/the tech bros in charge.
I don't think we will ever see something similar to the GDPR in the EU here in the US. Sad truth is that companies like Google and Facebook will block this attempts since they make lots of money with collecting and selling data. The other sad truth is that many Americans don't care about privacy

Any protection from them?
They're trying to get the EU regs lifted as well.
Our personal data is a human right. Blows my mind how many people don't care.
